353 If any of you have read the third edition of the "Silmarillion", then you would recall a letter from Tolkien to a friend at another university. Tolkien's reasons for writing the book was to fill a gap that he saw in myths at that time. He believed there was a certain element missing from the story, and he also believed every story is about a "fall". He says the "Silmarillion" is a story about the fall of the Elves from their grace. I do think that he mentions the Balrogs are winged demons in his letter, but I'd have to check again.
