What is Banned Book Week? It is only national celebration of the freedom to read. It started in 1982 in answer to a surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. It's held the last week of September. This year it will run Sept 9 to Oct 3. Last year, 513 challenges reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom in 2008 (this is probably far fewer than the actual number, most of these cases are not reported).
Attempting to censor what is available to everyone based on one person's point of view is not acceptable behavior. If you find it offensive, don't read it or let your child read it. That's your choice but don't tell me I can not read it, because that's my choice. Celebrate your freedom to read!

I just started The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I just got out of the hospital a few days ago so I'm going to need to catch up on my reading!
William.. I think that's one reason I liked it. I heard part of the audio book and then when I said something about reading the book, my husband went into his office and pulled it off his shelf and gave it to me (I didn't know he had it!!)I liked the documentary feel and the fact it was a "after" kind of thing, not a story of the actual zombie war or whatever.
William, you'll have to tell me what you think of WWZ. I don't really do zombie books but I liked it!
I'm reading:Secret Speakers by KSR Kingworth
and then I'll start
War and Peace - we'll see how far I get
I gave up on the Host.Right now I'm reading The Watchman (graphic novel), since the movie is coming out soon. After that it'll be: The History of Love and Little Women for book clubs.
I haven't yet. If I really fell in love with a book, I might.. but my problem with people is... as a person I have paid for some type of entertainment, I do not care what they think about global warming, baby vaccines, antidepressants, Tibet, or whatever the country du jour is n the Celeb list this week because almost without fail, they say something that makes no sense or makes them sound like a box of rocks. Then I can't watch, read or listen to someone's work when I realize they are a jackwipe full of steaming piles of what my dogs leave on the lawn in the morning. So, I've learned it's best to just let them do their thing and I'll read their book, listen to their music or watch their movie and we can both keep our opinions to ourselves. :)
The Host - Stephanie Meyer..Probably won't get anything else read.. since I'm working on the NaNo project.
I'm reading Grave Peril by Jim Butcher. Next will be Summer Knight by Jim Butcher and probably the Becoming by Jeanne Stein.
I've done both and find PBS a much better place to get books. There is no standard for the books on BM.. so although the poster can list the condition, unless you ask and the poster is honest, you have no idea what kind of condition the book will be in. The wait for some books may be longer but I have a huge TBR pile, so waiting isn't a problem for me.
I have 57. Some are different versions of the same book.. It's gone down a bit.. I've gotten 7 WL books in 2 weeks. Eek. I'm going to have to buy credits pretty soon. :)
Holly, your comment makes me laugh because I have gone about 4 months with no WL offers but now I've been offered 5 in 2 days. LOL. I told my husband I should have decided no books but WL a long time ago. It seems to increase my luck!
I'm reading Grave Peril by Jim Butcher and then I'll read Lies My Teacher Told Me by James Loewen. Then its off to Eclipse and Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. I plan to tackle Mt. TBR after that and NOT order any books from PBS unless it's a WL offer or buy any thing new.
Luckily (for now) I get to read at work a lot. Usually a few hours or so every day. Might change in next few weeks so I'm going to enjoy it while I can!
