I enjoy reading urban fantasy more than I do paranormal romance. I don't mind if there's some romance in it, but to me it gets boring if there isn't a good story behind it.
Some favorite urban fantasy books...
War of the Oaks by Emma Bull
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
any books by Charles de Lint
Little Big by John Crowley
Weaveworld by Clive Barker
The Vampire Files by P.N. Elrod
The Stolen Child by Keith Donahue
I did try to get into the Dresden books by Jim Butcher, but they weren't my thing.
And for romance urban fantasy books....
Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris
Anita Blake series by Anita Blake
(though for both of those series I preferred the early books and gave up on Anita around book 10)
I've also read some of Kelley Armstong, Patricia Briggs, Kim Harrison, and Tanya Huff.
I read one book by Karen Marie Moning, but I didn't care for her writing style, too much sex and not enough story.
