3124 It's an excellent book. And the soul theory is something the characters mull over themselves. I hope Carriger delves more into it in future books. No spoilers, but soul seems to take on a different meaning in Alexia's world than what's traditionally accepted.

Definitely well-worth reading!

3124 Lynda, I haven't watched jeopardy in ages. Maybe I'll avoid it so I can keep thinking of myself as smart!

3124 On line trivia tournament? Sounds fun!

3124 Well, I didn't say we shouldn't be crushing on him. :)

3124 Dawn, Laura's description is how I generally differentiate between the two, since there are several series that touch that romance/paranormal thriller line.

UF doesn't always have a strong romantic element. Jim Butcher and Simon R. Green are good examples of UF without the sexy edge.

3124 Dawn, join the Paranormal Romance group. There are tons of people on there just as obsessed with the BDB as you are! (I'm in it, so you can access it from my profile page if you like.) I've only read the first one so far, but I really liked V and Butch. Happy reading!

3124 From Dead to Worse was right after with the de Castro takeover.

I'm fanatical. Don't blame your memory.

3124 All Together Dead actually is the Sookie book with the guards. It's the one where they go to the vamp caucus.

3124 Anne, are you liking Percy? I bought the first recently but haven't read it yet.

3124 I loved Winkie! I'd agree that it ended up in fiction because it's more social commentary with the bear just being the chosen vehicle. It was excellent.

3124 I've read everything but Fool, which is sitting here waiting for me! Try his Blog. He's just as funny there, too.

3124 A Dirty Job is about a totally Beta guy who suddenly gets the job of reaping souls. There are large, slobbering Hell Hounds involved. And they like to chomp soap bubbles.

I was reading it during downtime at an info desk, and random people kept stopping just to find out why I was laughing so hard.

3124 Of Christopher Moore's stuff I'd most recommend Dirty Job, followed by Lamb. The Stupidest Angel was great too with zombie Santa. Oddly enough, You Suck and its predecessor Bloodsucking Fiends are my least favorites of his!

3124 It was very different, wasn't it, Joseph? I loved it, and have his other books at home to read. S Nameless Witch was okay. Too Many Ogres was quite funny.

Have you read any Christopher Moore? He's sorta similar in wacky tone.

Congrats on the (new) home!

3124 Suz, that sassy little dog is just adorable! I love the atypical were and vamp duo. They're such a contrast to all the hyper-sexy creatures we read about. I have more of Martinez's books sitting here...I really need to get at em!

3124 Lynda, welcome back! I flipped through Twilight in the bookstore and didn't like the writing much either. It didn't grab me and scream "buy me". If you do go ahead with the second, I'll be interested to see your opinion. You're right that sometimes a second book is better than the first, and so many people DO seem to love it...

Suz, are you liking Gil's All Fright? It had me cracking up.

3124 How did people feel about how Jo handles her powers in the practical sense? Using her knowledge as a mechanic as an analogy for what she wants to accomplish magically?

3124 blackrose, I've read three out of the four books so far, so to be fair my assessment of him is probably cumulative.

Thinking about it more carefully, in US I think he does fit the "What next?" role, but to become that involved and to hang on that long, he must think it's all a fascinating sort of crazy.

They keep getting closer over the course of the books.

3124 blackrose: "Just once I'd love someone to find out they had some cool powers and go "Oh, wow, this is AWESOME!"...How many people wouldn't love to have something genuinely supernatural happen, even just a little?"

See, for me, this is what Gary brings to the table. He's lived life, thought he'd seen it all, and then the Powers that Be see fit to dump this "crazy broad" in his life and he's so excited by all of it, he just HAS to find out what insane supernatural thing happens next. He's in a position and at an age that he can afford to accept strange goings on. And he's a go with the flow, seize the moment kind of guy. He refuses to pass up the chance for something amazing. Compared to the "why me" characters and doubting Thomases, he's awesome.
