My very advanced reader 7 year old boy liked Fergus Crane/Hugo Pepper/ (there's a third who's name I can't remember). They're linked, but apparently it's not necessary to read in order.
I used to plug through. I've read some really poorly written books and or dull books in my time. But I don't know if I just don't have the patience I used to or what the reason is, but if I'm not really into a book within 100 pages (sometimes less), I commit what I used to consider the ultimate crime. I just skip to the end so I know what happens, if it's that sort of book. Sometimes I just skip ahead about 50 pages just to see if it's more interesting later. If it's not, I don't force myself to read it.
I agree with not listening to the weather man - but ours were wrong the other way. So everything shut down because we were supposed to get at least an inch of ice. And we got a very light coating. DH still thinks I shouldn't be walking out in it (I have a habit of taking nasty falls while pregnant), so he's glad the whole state shut down.
Booksfree.com is sort of like that, Holli. I did that for a while, but I wasn't reading a lot for quite a while, so I cancelled it. I think it might be a better deal - there's no limit to how many books you can get in a month, just how many you can have out at a time. Their selection/protocol for how books got sent out were a little iffy, IMO, but customer service was fabulous.
I've traded over 100 books on PBS and never received a book I was unhappy with. I've gotten three or four that had a strong cigarette smell - so if you can't stand that, I would definitely make it part of your conditions. Otherwise, assume you're getting a decent used book.
Becoming the mother of four kids 7 and under is my big adventure for 2008. Between being pregnant and having a newborn (I'm due in June), I doubt I'll have much room for any other adventures. In 2009, though, look out. LOL. I'm due this year on our 10th wedding anniversary, so I told DH I want to do something major for our 11th instead. I don't know what it is, yet, but something.
I don't shop there - but have you looked into Paperbackswap.com? All you do is pay postage for the books you have that someone else wants. You then get a credit and request a book that someone else has. Most of the mass market paperbacks are readily available or have a quick moving waitlist. That's where I get most of my books, although my library seems to be getting much better lately.
I'd love to read a classic. I always mean to, but never seem to get the ambition to do it. I love historical fiction and biographies too.
I have a blog - it's totally random, mainly about my kids and knitting and/or other hobbies. American Idol. College football in the fall. Maybe some basketball once the tournament starts. Basically, whatever I feel like writing about, whenever I feel like writing (which means sometimes there's large gaps).http://mamachris.blogspot.com/
My only time to really get into a book is at night after the kids go to bed, at which point I'm usually too tired to read anything of substance that actually requires the slightest bit of concentration. I can sometimes sneak in some reading at naptime, but since I'm pregnant I'm taking my own nap lately.Part of my problem is all the other hobbies I have that cut into reading time. And if I could just leave the computer alone for an entire day, I think I'd be more productive too.
I just picked it up at the library a little while ago. I'm a fast reader too, but I don't get a lot of time to really concentrate and read, so it might take me a week, but probably no more.
Hi, I'm Christy. I love to read too (isn't that why we're all here?). I'll read absolutely anything if I'm bored, although if I'm not bored, I'm pretty ruthless about dropping books that aren't well written. I like historical fiction when I'm feeling rested and can concentrate (not very often with 3 kids and a fourth on the way) and romance novels when I need a quick read. Sometimes I get in the mood for mysteries, but not too much lately.
