oohh love this topic!! seriously audio is the only way I get things read!
my two fav narrators are George Guidall (he did The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana by Umberto Echo. and I think he has done a Cormac McCarthy book. He also was the voice of the old man in The history of love. I like his parts of that book.
and Tom Stechschulte who did No Country for Old Men. I have listened to many things by both of these narrators and love every min of them speaking.
There are other books that I know I would not have been able to actually read. but I loved listening to them... Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card and A Clockwork Orange. to name two.
so Tera we must be long lost sisters. I bake almost everyday. during the holiday, twice a day. i would love to go to culinary school but dont' want to do anything with it (other than make all of my friends and family as gluttonous as I am).
I am thinking about taking some local cooking and baking classes. but just can't seem to find the time! so for now I teach myself!
ok so I loved the Notebook movie. hated the book!! I just don't like his style of writing.
there was an article in entertainment weekly (or some such mag) about him. he said that his brother inlaw once asked a woman whether or not she like Sparks' books. (presumably because he saw her reading) she said no, she hated them. end of that conversation! but Sparks told the interviewer that he gets that alot. the people not liking his books thing. Sparks then went on to say something to the effect of: 15 bestsellers in 15 years, I must be doing somethin g right.
did anyone hear about the Frankie Jordan girl (the one that looks and sings like amy winhouse) spilling the beans to TMZ about making it through to the finals? they were following her while she was house hunting. well let's just say AI has not shown her on Hollywood week.
anyway, my favs are the two guys from the group that went w/out music. bestfriends, one recently lost his wife. can't wait to see how far he gets.
This is so sad. He is one of my favortie authors. Rabbit run was so great I wrote a college essay comparing it with Babbit by Sincalir Lewis. Oh what a loss this is to the literary communtiy.
I have been putting off reading The Witches of Eastwick but will move it to the top of my list!
so as soon as this baby is removed from my body, i am drastically changing the way I eat. I too have tried WW (the points systems) and liked it (not loved)it. so I am going to try their core program. with all three of my children i gained between 60-70 pounds. most came off in between. which is kind of amazing considering there was only 6 months between # 1 and 2. but I, like alot of you, want to be healthy for my ACTIVE boys. I want to be able to run and play with them and not just sit on the sidelines.
so i know for it to be easier come March, i need to cut out the good stuff now. but seriously how can i say no to cravings? peppermint ice cream and fritos taste so good together!!
I found one that I thought looked good. Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters. I am really interested in Steinbeck. he also wrote Travels with Charely which look interesting too.
I got two copies of Madame Bovary and really beautifully illustrated edition of Pippi Longstockings, Persausion, and a copy of 1001 books for every mood. Funny thing is both my sister and husband worked off the same list from one of my bookshelves. hence the two copies of one book. and one beat the other to a different book.
oh beth Cooked was good (not great in my opinion)but good! I listened to it while driving home from Iowa. Jeff Henderson reads it. and slipped into the slang dialect a little too often for me. but the story was a good one and interesting. have you seen his show on Food network?
I made a shelf. "Books my Husband can buy me" and directed him here. I don't think he has made it to GR though. some of mine are
Alice in Wonderland
2666 and the savage detectives by Bolano
a collection of Elmore leonard shorts.
madame Bovary
some jane austen
not sure if Santa-baby will bring me anything off my list though. shucks!
so I just looked at the lists.. and i have to say Thanks a freakin' lot!! :)
now my to-read list just grew a foot! oh well, i guess that is not a bad thing. right?
there are two songs I love!! and cannot find anywhere.
"Suzy Snowflake" ( I am not sure if that is the actual title)
one sung by Rosemary Clooney and some guy (probably Sinatra, Martin or Crosby) about snow and bears and something else. I have no clue what the title is.
both were on a Starbucks mix "tape" the company made us play when I worked there. now that they have XM piped in (and the "tapes" went out the window five years ago) there is no way of finding either. boohoo.
I love Christmas music. ALL of it. right now I like Chris Isaak and the Charlie Brown music.
AMEN Paige!!
Whoever said "This is the only [Fill in the blank:] you will ever need for your baby" is a big fat LIAR! babies are expensive. every mom I know has had at least 3 or more diaper bags and 2-5 strollers. so don't go over board. on everything!
we are dealing with the "KILL" word lately. who knew a 3 year old could know what that means?? I let a lot slide (with boys you have to) but not that!! fun times!
so as far as the boy girl dilemma,
Boys are much harder physically and girls are harder mentally.
I have two boys with a third on the way. A new mom recently asked me when I stopped worrying. I told her I finally reached a point when I stopped trying to prevent the boo-boos and fixed/kissed them when they happened. I have been to the ER more with my 2-year old than I personally have been in mt life.
boys will turn ANYTHING into a gun or sword. and girls will play house with tanks and gi joes if she has to. It is just natural!!
So I just re-joined this group to offer my advice.
You will get alot of it too. so filter out what will and will not work for you. you asked for it here, so we are telling. but there will be more people than you know(moms, grandmoms, women and men) who will offer you advice when all you need/want is for said people to shut-up! just ignore them!
I have two or three things to add to what others have said...
breast-feeding: Every woman is different. My sister could feed a village, my other sister just should not have tried to begin with. I tried and could not (my first was allergic, my second just made me depressed). If you want to and can, DO IT!! more power to you!! If you tried and cannot, DO NOT feel guilty! Bonding with your baby is better than breastfeeding.
Sock, burp clothes, etc:
Like other has said...Socks don't stay on. Robeez do but in June you won't need them.
what they say is true..
Dress your baby like you would yourself, then remove one piece of clothing.
Boppies are over-rated. use a pillow.
When you think you have enough burp clothes, get more.
Pacifiers are not the devil!
Names: I agree to about the intial thing..
but remember monograms too. I am expecting my third. in tossing around names, one combo would have given him W W F as a monogram (last name is the middle initial).
most importantly: get a bouncy seat/swing. something safe to put the baby in. because it will not hurt them to cry while you take a shower, eat, etc. this goes along with the sleeping when they sleep!! If the baby is safely buckled in, s/he is safe! Take a Shower (they are few and far between.
that being said...You cannot hold a baby too much!
Hi new to the group.
This may sound lame, but...
the Weight Watchers My Program cookbook is great!! Trying to loose weight or not, the recipes are easy and flavorful. They are also easy to tweak. The book is about 15 bucks and only available at a WW center/store. It is worth going to pick up.
