I just finished reading this book tonight. I read it in less than 24 hrs. It was so good and pulled me in. I laughed at the maids and their thoughts at the craziness at what the white women were doing. I cried at the heartache in all they had to go through.
My Husband is 16 yrs. older than I am and when I was laughing at one part he asked me what I was reading and I told him about the book. How shocking to me that he told me he was raised for 6 yrs. of his life by a black maid. He said he kept in touch with her until she died and thought the world of her and her family. I didn't know this. He was raised by two different Aunts, his Mom left him with the first one when he was 4 yrs. old and that was the one who had the maid. He was shifted to the next Aunt later. She raised him until he left home. She is still alive and is who he considers his "Mom" and who we will be spending Thanksgiving with this Thursday just like we have for the past 12 yrs.
He told me many stories tonight about her and now I can't remember her name. I asked if his Aunt was ever mean to her or did they treat her any different and he said no he never remembered that. He did remember his Aunt taking a lot of criticism for standing up for her maid, I guess like Skeeter did in the book. Although we aren't in Mississippi, Louisiana was certainly just as bad and I told him if I'd lived in the 60's I don't think he would have liked me too much because I would have been one of the ones marching with the Civil Rights protestors. He just laughed and said if I'd lived through it he would still be with me.
Such a powerful book and I'm so glad I finally had a chance to read it.
I agree with what you're saying Tera. I'm not really sure why certain people take things a different way than others, there is always going to be one person in a group who will do that. I believe in voicing our opinions but like you said anything dealing with religion or politics and it's going to border on nasty because generally people want you to believe as they do.

Terri,
As stated at the bottom of my post, that was my opinon, just like everyone else gave their opinion on this subject. If you took it as a negative comment because it wasn't for Obama, well that's your way to interpret my comment. If you'd like a list of people who were actually deserving of this honor do a Google search and you will find many. There is no need for me to take the time to list them for you here. I stand by my opinion. Just like you have the right to stand by yours.
Have a great night.
I haven't been on the group board for quite some time since I had to have my password reset. Then I find this topic right off.
First let me say I agree with Tera, what did he do to win the prize? If it was something before the 11 days of his Presidency and he didn't become President do you think they would have given him the award anyway? Or to someone else who was in the limelight at the time?
If it's a Peace prize then whey are our troops still in Iraq when they were to be home by this summer? One of his "promises" was to bring them home and stop the war, instead he's sending them to Afganistan now. I know firsthand, my cousin has been called up and will leave in January going there for 2 years. The war is not ending like he said. But we will blame that on Bush of course.
By 2012 everyone who believes in what Obama is telling them will realize that most of what he's been saying has been a speech written for him and what he's read from a teleprompter and that's it. I don't believe this man can change very much or improve very much more. Our situation is much worse than it was and if this health care bill passes we are going to be in a terrible world of hurt. I know I read the entire 1000+ bill, have you? Lots of extras trying to go in under the proposed health care bill.
So Peace Prize? For what? I don't see any Peace being sent out of the White House right now. I could think of many pastors he could have given this award to that are trying to promote peace and they would have been more deserving of the award.
That's my opinion.
I just finished Janet Evanovich's newest book Finger Lickin' Fifteen. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed, her books are starting to all sound basically the same. Just my opinion of course.
I guess I should have added I'm sandiLa on Twitter. LOL I've added the ones who provided their names.
I got my Kindle. They upgraded me from the orignial to the Kindle2. It's awesome and I love it. I've subscribed to some of the blogs they offer and the NY Times blog too. You can download samples of books to read while you're traveling if you want and then buy the book if you like it. Amazon saves everything you download in case something happens and you loose anything or if you delete it and want to add it back again.
The screen is amazing and clear. I did purchase a screen cover but that was just my personal preference. I also purchased a cover to put it in. I'm really enjoying mine. I don't leave my wireless on all the time. I turn in on when I want to sync and check for updates.
I love the speaking ability so if I'm busy or getting dressed and want it to read to me I can turn that option on, kind of like a book on tape.
You can also look things up on the internet on the K2.
I think it's well worth it and I'm not going to just forgo ever buying a book again. Some books aren't avaiable on the K2. And like someone else stated I was running out of room for books.
Congratulations Teri. You sound like you did a great job with this and being a single Mom once in my life I know how hard that is. You deserve a big pat on the back.
And how sweet of you Holli to share this article with us. I'm glad you did.
I have a copy of The Heretic's Daughter to give away. I just finished it yesterday. It's new and hardback. I'll mail it to you. First person gets it. Thanks.
It goes to Mich. Thanks Mich I hope you enjoy it.
I have to admit that I didn't vote for President Obama but after his win I did agree to support him as I hope everyone in our country will come together and do instead of trying to tear him down.
I watched and Tivo'd the inauguration so I can put it on a tape for my son to have later when he's older. I was moved to tears by all the people and the President Obama's speech. What beautiful words.
I look forward to giving him a chance and I see that he's already making a huge difference in our country.
I love g/c to amazon, itunes. I like chocolate, esp. cello's cherries. Yum. This is going to be great fun.
Whew. That's great because I'm currently in the middle of The Time Traveler's Wife and I really didn't want to get started on such a big book and have to stop this one. :D
I agree I hope we do it in sections and then discuss it, that would be helpful. I can understand being a student and trying to read. I didn't read much at all during Nursing School unless it was for class because of all the studying.
Thanks for letting me know.
What day are we starting? Any plans on how many sections we're reading? Or are we going at our own pace?
