Wow, I look forward to seeing how all this plays out, Holli! It's refreshing to hear good job news! It seems like all we hear lately is anything but.
Surprise: I didn't know Slumdog Millionaire was based on a book! I watched it win all the awards and haven't seen the movie. Has anyone read the book? Thoughts?Great list, by the way, Jamie. I bookmarked it so I can look at all the years!
Ditto to getting organized, ya'll, but mine comes in the form of learning how to can food! My mom always canned stuff, but I didn't get that gene. I have vivid images of poisoning my family that seem to hold me back. But I'm going to try it. I'm going to a neighbor's house tomorrow night to learn how . . . again. And, my husband and I are going to plant a garden this year! Wahooo! He's been ixnaying the ardengay for three years now. He's finally admitted his dreamed of shed is NOT going in that space. And so, peas and carrots, here I come. Dirt on my hands and knees, bring it on!
I'm sitting here reading all your comments about audiobooks, wondering what has taken me so long to start listening to books instead!I saw What is the What mentioned several times. Now I'm curious!
Oh no, Jamie. I'm almost afraid to click on the link to BN's bargain books. I didn't know it existed...As for my recent purchases, I bought a couple of Shannon Hale's books the other week at a writer's conference. I swore I wasn't going to buy any books, but she was there. At a table. Signing. And well, you know the rest...I got Book of a Thousand Days, and Rapunzel's Revenge, a graphic novel. It reminded me of the French Tintin and Asterix books I raised my kids on.
Brenda wrote: "Ashley wrote: "Anyone have any suggestions for a really great book (preferably fiction)that I could sink my teeth into? Lately, some of the books I've read have been just ok or so-so. I would love ..."You might want to have a look at some of Shannon Hale's books. She won a Newbery honor for one of them, and right now I'm reading The Book of a Thousand Days. You won't have your teeth sunk into it for long, since it's a quick read, but it's an enjoyable story.
Oh yeah...I raised my children on D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Mythology. It's illustrated in beautiful watercolors (or pastels?) so even I can remember some of the stories, and who's who in the world of the ancient greek myths.
From what I know about Kindles (and you'll be getting yours, Tera :), the screen looks like paper, and the ink used on it looks like real ink. Amazon's whole focus was on creating something that disappeared in your hands, just like a book does, so that you get caught up in what you're reading.Unless things have changed, every Kindle download is $9.99. Sony is more flexible. I suppose it's a matter of preference, but I don't know what the differences are.
Whenever I go to the mailbox, I wish there were something personal there for me, and I enjoy writing letters, too, even if I'm out of the habit! Count me in.
I'm with Sheila. I don't re-read a lot of books, and bringing a journal along with lots of pens would be number one, next to the Bible, Dammaphada, Book of Mormon and . . . lets see, that's four . . . a survival guide book! Very boring, probably, but those books would give me hope and help me keep my sanity. That is unless, of course, some of you were there! Then we could trade books in between having a luau!
I can think of a book that I'd like to nominate, but it feels strange to nominate it myself. Then again, maybe it's not the sort of book that would fit in with the group? ...Secret Speakers and the Search for Selador's Gate
Jackie, I'm glad you're back and feeling better, too. I'm sending lots of healing thoughts your way, and that goes for you, too, Holli, because it sounds like you're doing everything you can to keep your heart healthy even now, after all those years. ((((((hugs))))))
Blossom, Jo. That's beautiful. And ditto to everyone's comments, even though I feel like I'm on the outside looking in...
Darn. I wish I was at a different point of life right now. I'm up to my eyeballs in schtuff and need to stay focused, otherwise i'd be there chatting. I'm sending you all hugs.
It's a little late for me to be coming into this thread, but I just found out about it from Holli's blog. I've really enjoyed everyone's comments and have so much to say, but I wouldn't know where to begin.I spent some time thinking about what my word, or words would be for 2009. Right now I ache all over and want to crawl back in bed, but I want to share the words I want to express, moment to moment, regardless of life's predictable upheavals.
Gratitude + Delight = Karey Shane 2009
Last year was overshadowed by surgeries that required months of healing, lying in bed, staring out windows, watching Monk, going blind in my right eye, getting rushed to the hospital with appendicitis. But the silver lining in those dark clouds was that I was given the gift of sight, the gift of being at peace with silence, the gift of letting go, and the gift of delighting in small and simple things.
I am grateful for my life. Every breath I take is a miracle to me. Every leaf I see on the tree is a colorful jewel. Every ounce of strength I feel in my bones is a gift that carries me onward and outwards into the world. Every clear thought is a delight that pierces the fog of my sometimes muddy mind.
I am grateful.
Great idea, Tera! I'm the worst at mailing things, so you'd all be frustrated if I participated, but I'm a wannabe Trading Post member. Just pretend I'm answering phones for you or something.
Yes it is a great feeling, Debbie. And I'm laughing from all the posts! Happy New Year to my chickie girl friends. I watched Sabrina last night, so now my holiday vedge days are complete. Sigh....With gratitude and appreciation to each one of you, Karey.
Hi girls! I entered Secret Speakers and the Search for Selador's Gate in a cell phone novel contest, to win $1000! The deadline is New Year's Eve.)So far, Secret Speakers keeps switching first and second place, depending on how the votes are coming in. Would you consider logging in to the site and voting "Thumbs Up" for it? Here's the link: http://www.TextNovel.com. Thanks a ton!
I'm hoping to get a new computer with the winnings. My laptop Spunkie is 10 years old, and very arthritic, poor thing.
I hope you're all enjoying the holidays!
Karey
