I just picked up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies again. I was reading it a little while ago but got distracted by the start of my college semester. Now I'm getting back to it as bedtime reading. I think its a really cool twist on P&P.
Christy - I do get a little sad if I leave without anything but at this point I have so many that I need to get through at home that buying anything else just doesn't make sense. The other thing is that instead of buying the book I put it on hold at the library...Lori - Ragtime is great! I read it in high school and really liked it. Let me know what you think!
Kim - I recently bought The Omnivore's Dilemma as well as Animal Vegetable Miracle. I'm really looking forward to reading them both!
Kelly Jo - Garlic and Sapphires is incredible! Ruth Reichl has fabulous voice and her descriptions of the characters she thinks up are fantastic!I was able to refrain from buying anything at the bookstore last night (its a first) but I almost got Peach Cobbler Murder by Joanne Fluke. Her books are my quick light reads.
I'm currently in the middle of a whole bunch of books: The Bell Jar, listening to 1984 on audio, reading The Amber Spyglass. I feel like I'm all over the place but hopefully I will finish something soon and that'll help.
I hit a little bit of a slump with The Bell Jar so I'm reading The Subtle Knife; I've got about 30 pages left in it.My slump is more related to family issues than the actual book. Its really great but reading about some else's depression when feeling down yourself...well its just not helpful.
So I went Father's Day shopping a while ago and ended up getting books for myself as well as my brother...For him we got:
The Iliad (for summer reading)
The Soldiers of Halla (the latest Pendragon book)
For me/my family I got:
Bonk
Animal Vegetable Miracle
The Omnivores Dilemma
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
I'm currently working my way through a large list of books I had been meaning to read for a long time but I can't wait to sink my teeth into these new ones!
I'm absolutely loving The Bell Jar but I'm not sure if that should worry me. Given Sylvia Plath's history and untimely death, do I really want to fall into her style of thinking/writing. I don't know at this point but I'm really glad I finally picked this book up!
Welcome to all the new "chicks"!Ally - I'm currently reading The Bell Jar, and really enjoying it, but I Capture the Castle is another one of my all-time favorites! I don't know a whole lot of people who have read it, or at least nobody talks about it, so I'm always happy to meet someone who loves it! Welcome!
Haha, Teri! There are kids toys based on the same premise so it might be a nostalgia thing? At the same time, plenty of engineers would go for that kind of thing, myself included, but I definitely wouldn't show it to company... This guy is totally ridiculous - its called a taser for a reason, pocket or otherwise. Just because you didn't buy a cattle prod doesn't mean its not going to hurt! I had a teacher in middle school who almost lit herself on fire because she had a 9 volt battery and some change in her jeans pocket. This guy totally reminds me of that story.
Simple proof that common sense... really isn't common.
I have the feeling I might want one of these after I finish The Bell Jar... I really like Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swensen mysteries but I might try to get into another Carl Hiassen. Otherwise I could go for some nice fluffy chick lit like Misery Loves Cabernet. I thought the title was just too funny to pass up!
Now that I'm done with Choke, which I really liked but was expecting it to have more in it, as compared to the movie, than it really did, I am reading Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar.I just started it, 15 pages in, but with everything I had heard about it I'm surprised at how funny she is. I'm interested in how this story progresses.
Don't worry about not knowing the titles other people are reading, Claire! Its a great way to hear about books that you might actually like.I'm really liking Choke but its definitely irreverent and not for those easily insulted by language or sexual references...
Hmmm, I was figuring you might be from Florida so Skinny Dip might have made more sense for you.I've already seen the movie of Choke but heard from a co-worker at B&N that the book is a lot better. Since I liked the movie I wanted to give this a try. At this point, I know it can't be any worse than Lolita for subject matter so I figure I'll make it. Plus, I like Palahniuk's writing style, he kinda reminds me of Vonnegut in some ways.
I'll keep everyone posted of my impressions!
Renee, where are you from? The region could definitely impact the interest level, or how quickly people pick up a certain style. Now I'm on to reading Choke. I enjoyed the movie but heard that the book was much better so I'm excited to read it!
Heidi wrote: "Sonya---Hiassen is definitely a "boys" book rather than a "chick's" book... he has a very interesting sense of humor... my husband loves 'em."
Yeah, I did get that from reading this one but I usually don't think thats an issue for me. I read Ian Flemming's James Bond and all kinds of sci-fi stuff regularly. I'm hoping that it just rubbed me the wrong way in the moment or that particular one just wasn't for me...
Sarah - The Earthsea books are FABULOUS! Le Guin is such an incredible writer!Jessica - I totally agree with you about the Discworld series as well. For now my favorites are the witches books, especially Witches Abroad and Carpe Jugulum, and then The Truth. Which ones do you like?
Melissa - The Joanne Fluke books are a total guilty pleasure of mine. I love Hannah and her interactions with the others are so funny! I haven't tried any of the recipes in the books though, do you know if they work?
Thanks Heidi! I will try Sick Puppy. I was really sad that I didn't like Skinny Dip because I had that one recommended by a good friend whose opinion I trust. Then again, she did say her brother really likes Hiassen so I'm not sure how to take that...
Robin, I also really enjoyed The House of the Spirits. I just couldn't read anything else that intense right after it...
Okay, so I finished The House of the Spirits then couldn't read anything serious because it really got me with its depth and dense story. Then I read Skinny Dip as something light (and to try out a new author because I had heard good things) but found that that was actually TOO light and I didn't really enjoy it. Now I've just finished The Hunger Games which was quite excellent; I really loved the details about the world and the interesting look at living circumstances (it reminded me of Theseus and the Minotaur..).NOW I'm going to start reading Slaughterhouse Five and I have 1984 going on audio. Lots of reading going on...
