I found this article and I was just thinking about it and I don't know..I feel old-fashioned or too idealistic after reading this. I'm only 24 and I'm in an exclusive relationship that is heading into marriage..so maybe I just don't know how it is. I figured I'd ask my fellow chicks their opinion :)

Jonathan Safran Foer is coming out with a new book called Eating Animals. I got so excited when I saw he was coming out with a new one..wish it was a novel..but I'm down for reading this.
The October Countryand I liked reading Frankenstein during the fall for some reason..even though I didn't find it scary.
I'm planning on reading Dracula and House of Leaves this October.

I've always been a bit skeptical of these kinds of books..but at the same time I feel as though they can have certain truths in them for me to think about and apply to my life. I feel like I'm just in a rut in my life and I'm miserable..with my job, with my lack of money, and the fact that I just am not doing all the things I want to do with my life. So..I'm looking for perhaps a few good books that might help me change my perspective. Any suggestions?
I think I want to make this the thread for people who have already finished the book and one for people who are reading through it.
Sorry everyone..I was supposed to start the discussion..however..I was on vacation and the second place we stayed had no internet..sorry..but thanks for stepping up Rose!
I have to chime in. I've been biting my lip watching all this back and forth banter and I'm so so sad that it's happening...this was one of the few groups that I felt like there was no "drama" in. Even if people disagreed 100% about something everyone was so civil and not defensive. It was all about the respect and being openminded. I have not really been a part of this group lately because I've seen snippy comments that I didn't like or someone stating their opinion in a rude way. It's sad because I really use to love this group and I felt like it was a place where I knew my opinion is respected. But after having someone on here try and ruffle my feathers on here once..I've had a hard time coming back.So..let's learn to agree to disagree..and realize that everyone is NOT the same as you and will not like the same things! Don't be so narrow to think your opinion is the right one..and don't jump on someone who states their opinion about not liking something and try to debate them to death. Just disagree and move on!! That's what makes this group great..we are all different and have different tastes!!
thanks for the advice everyone! I think tomorrow I'm just going to focus on getting things in piles when I get home and then on Thursday before work I'll tackle a pile or two.
This has to do with cleaning..but not necessarily what was originally posted..hope that's ok :)I have let my room become a disaster area. It's to the point that it overwhelms me everytime I look at it..so I don't. I shut my door and go elsewhere in the house until I have to sleep. It literally looks like how you would imagine a room to look like in the aftermath of a tornado. Clothes everywhere. and who knows what else. Mostly clothes..(ps. Confessions of a Shopaholic is my life story. haha) Anyways..I keep putting it off further because I don't know where to start and I know that there is junk in there that I should get rid of from college and stuff that I didn't even TAKE to college with me in all my years there..but every time I go to start cleaning..I take one look at my room and panic and start to feel overwhelmed and anxious about where to start. Any tips? I need to do like one big "spring cleaning"..but I just don't know where to start.
1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat? I can't say I'm careful..but I'm not horrible. I try not to abuse them!2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper? I tend to dog ear them because I always end up dropping my bookmark somewhere. Or I put in anything I can find.
3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page? I normally don't write in my books.
4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect? Oh they are always being thrown into my purse and wherever else.
5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place? yep all the time.
6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort? I sometimes bathe with them..but I'm super careful not to get them wet.
7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor? A mixture of all of the above..I have them lined up on a bookshelf..and on top of those books..and in a box..and piled on the floor. Hmm..kinda like my clothes..ahh too many books and clothes!
8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks? I prefer paperback..but I won't discriminate.
9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for? Pretty well cared for. Some are loved in a battered way but probably because I got them like that.
Some books I've gotten recently either at Borders or PBS or swapping with people here:Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
The Glass Castle A Memoir
Never Let Me Go
Cash The Autobiography
The Alienist
