This entire issue of body image is the one (of a few) reasons why I don't really read "Women's" mags. I know the social factors that make editors pick these girls but I'm not paying good money to look at some emaciated girl who is suppose to be the "ideal" when I can see bones sticking out everywhere!
Yes, I get there are naturally "skinny" women. I had a friend in high school was naturally really thin and she looked healthy, not like a skeleton. Women come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so for goodness sake, let's see some variety!
That's Jackie's rant of the day. :)
I don't dislike it yet. I'm still forming opinions right now.. but I will say, especially with a long book, I like to see more plot and/or character development than long passages of descriptions and/or long winded discussions of things that aren't really germane to moving along the plot or characters. I hope it picks up but I'm beginning to wonder. As far as character development goes.. I'm not impressed so far. I do feel their interaction is a bit stilted and everyone is very one dimensional.
He got a divorce recently, I believe, so he's a free agent! Yeah, my husband was like.."do I have to worry?" /glee
I love Cracker Barrel. They have the "old time" Southern food and General store feel down really well for a chain. It's not mom's or granny's food, but it's a pretty close second. Jennifer - high 70s in October is pretty good but summer here is mid 90s, 80% plus humidity (Can't breath!!) lol. So, this is the time of year where people can actually hang outside some before the wet winter. I joke that we have 2 seasons, 9 months of "summer" and 3 months of "not summer." The northern part of Georgia has more typical seasonal weather, but the father south you go, the more subtropical it feels.
And my husband has already pulled out Bing and Harry Connick!
Someone just forwarded me the an email about the Twilight books being banning in some primary schools in AU.I'm just realizing/thinking that there may be a little lag time between publishing and books catching someone's eye who will complain about them, so I guess we'll see if Twilight shows up on the lists in the future.
I'm the same way, Tanja. I would never presume to tell someone else they were not adult enough to figure out what they should read or to tell a parent they are not allowed to let their child read it. I can get a bit a tear about it, if I let myself.
You know, I'm kinda surprised I haven't seen Twilight on any of the challenged book lists.Tanja, His Dark Materials is anti religious .. You know Hollywood is run by the devil! So that's even more reason to ban the books (I wish I were only being facetious but I would bet a book someone probably really said that).
Jennifer, I'm with you. The middle of November is ok with me, in terms of bringing out the Christmas stuff. Mostly I was a bit surprised because last week, it still felt like summer here and Christmas was not on my mind at all. But this week, in just a matter of days, it seems, it's cooled off a bit. It's actually really pleasant (high 70s/low 80s).. so at least it feels like fall, at least! My husband took the Christmas decorations at CB as a sign to pull out all of his Christmas music.
I'm about 1/3 of way in. I'm a bit like Tera.. Stop rambling and get on with it. Although the descriptions are a bit long winded (and sometimes that's ok), the plot seems to drag a little, too. I hope it picks up a bit.
My husband and I went out to eat this weekend. We went to this place called Cracker Barrel. I don't think they have these in every state but they bill themselves as a restaurant and old country store. When we went in on Friday night, the employees were moving the Fall and Halloween themed items to the corners and putting out Christmas stuff in the center of the store part.
So when is it too early for you?
September is too early for me! It's not even Halloween and the fall stuff is on sale? Hmm.. What? It's still in high 80s here and the leaves are still green!!
I would almost guess he has. He's a major geek. Which is one reason why I just adore him.Did you realize you can look at the photos full size and actually see what is on his shelf? If you do that, many of those books look like older editions and look used.
So jealous!!! I hope any of our chickies who went had a blast!
One of the downsides of living in BFE in the south is that we don't ever have anything like this.
I do like this idea but it's a little pricey for me as well. I did like Shiela estimated the cost per book and realized I could just buy the books I wanted for the price I would pay for "renting" the books I was reading. Especially since there are months were I can't read a lot and only read 2 or 3 books.
At $8+ for books, it would be better to just buy them and swap via PBS or BookMooch and get more mileage imo.
I'm sort of in awe over library. But I heart Neil Gaiman. If I ever won the lotto, I'd have a room like that, kitty and all.
I just read that one of the most challenged books in the 1990s was The Handmaiden's Tale, along with One Hundred Years of Solitude and Of Mice and Men. In 2008, The Perks of Being A Wallflower and The Kite Runner are in the top 10 books.
What is Banned Book Week? It is only national celebration of the freedom to read. It started in 1982 in answer to a surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. It's held the last week of September. This year it will run Sept 9 to Oct 3. Last year, 513 challenges reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom in 2008 (this is probably far fewer than the actual number, most of these cases are not reported).
Attempting to censor what is available to everyone based on one person's point of view is not acceptable behavior. If you find it offensive, don't read it or let your child read it. That's your choice but don't tell me I can not read it, because that's my choice. Celebrate your freedom to read!

Sydney, I bought that song (know that I know who sings it!) My husband is going to get sick of it. lolYou know, I wondered why those red marks developed scabs this time, this is the first time that's happened. Must have taken a small layer of skin with them this time. Learn something new everyday.
And I know a trick for the tape residue, so at least this time, most of it was gone when I got home (rubbing alcohol). Maybe if I'd left it on, the folks at the restaurant would have thought hospital and not domestic and/or drug abuse (got numbers for both).
