2996 Such a great list-- and my to-be-read and library request lists get longer and longer!

2996 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I thought the spine was supposed to crack? I mean, as soon as you open the book, it cracks, doesn't it? Or am I just a brute?

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

I use whatever scrap of paper I can find.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

No no no! But the other day I was reading a library book where someone had made really funny notes in the margins-- so I was trying to figure out why, but it never made sense. They circled random words.

So maybe I should do that with a library book-- write cryptic notes that drive people mad-- in pencil of course:) No, I could never deface a library book.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

I put them into book bags if I'm carrying them, or on the bookshelf or at least in some sort of stack. But sometimes on the floor-- only 'cause we don't have that much furniture! No nightstand.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

Sometimes but the kids always move it.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

I do-- but I never have time for a bath so the books are safe.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

In disorder, but sometimes I make the shelves look pretty, or order them by subject. We got rid of most of our books when we moved to Hawaii.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

No.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

Item of clothing that is used and appreciated, like a windbreaker in Seattle.

2996 I always take a book in my car and read while I'm waiting for my kids to get out of school at pick-up time. And while my husband's driivng and at the dr's office and places like that.

If I'm into a book, I'll read it nonstop. Very very dangerous.

2996 My name is Margaret. I live in Hawaii with my husband and three kids-- we just moved here after my husband lost his job on the mainland and got a new one in Honolulu. I'm a writer and read as much as possible. Sometimes I'm afraid to begin a book because I forget to do anything but read. I read a lot of women's fiction but also love nonfiction.
