2996 I am reading Little Dorrit. It's a group read for the Victorians group and for myself I am reading Don't Look Now and Other Stories by Daphne Du Maurier.

2996 Spent the day out shopping with my sister and found some wonderful deals in Barnes & Noble. I got
Treasured Writings of Kahlil Gibran
Audrey Hepburn

The Audrey Hepburn and Paris books were discounted and then 50% off the discounted price. Kahlil Gibran was discounted as well. I am super excited and don't know which book to pick up first.

Recently I have purchased Major Pettigrew's Last Stand with some Christmas gift money and two ebooks, Déjà Dead and The Necklace: Thirteen Women and the Experiment That Transformed Their Lives for my brand new ebook reader! Whew! I think that's all the holiday book fun I can stand at least for a little while.

2996 I found some real treasures at Goodwill today and spent more than I really should have.

The Big Fisherman
Reading Lolita in Tehran
Becoming Madame Mao
Practical Magic
The Three Musketeers

My Mom read The Big Fisherman when she was younger and had told me that it was a really good book. I've had a bit of trouble finding it and was thrilled to see it on the shelf. Becoming Madame Mao is by Anchee Min whom I like, but her works are a little difficult to find in this area. Practical Magic has been on my list for awhile and I'm glad to own it. I also received my Goodreads Swap, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell which makes me very happy.

2996 I am almost finished with this book and I am enjoying it so far. I was surprised by our treatment of the immigrants on Angel Island. I think this mostly because I had never really given the subject much thought. I think Lisa See has done a wonderful job of bringing to life the relationship between sisters. We love each other and are always there for each other. We'll defend the other to anyone over anything and yet there is jealousy and competition. I find myself liking Pearl and identifying with her. I am the older sister as well and that may be the main reason. I would be very interested in reading this same story told from May pov. The insights would be quite eye opening I'm sure. I am finding it interesting that Pearl has become "more Chinese" since moving to America whereas in Shanghai she thought of herself as more Western. She has learned to respect the past and her heritage. Another passing scene that has stayed with me took place when they first arrived in America. The white Russians whom they looked down on were treated better than Pearl and May. It is another example of differing perspectives. I am eager to finish this book and am looking forward to the sequel.
