What's the best book that you've read recently?
I just finished "Unaccustomed Earth" by Jhumpa Lahiri and I loved it. I've never been a big fan of short stories, which is what this book is, but I did enjoy these. At the end of the first story I thought that I wouldn't like the rest because I didn't want the first story to be over yet. However, that was how I felt about almost all of them. I devoured the entire book. I highly recommend it.
You two picked some great ones! From your lists, I have to agree with:
1. Joe Morelli - love him
2. Ranger - love him, too! such a dilemma for me and Stephanie Plum
3. Phedre no Delaunay de Montreve - she was so tough
New ones:
1. Bridget Jones - I could totally relate to her and I really wanted her to have it all - all meaning Mark Darcy. :-)
2. Cassie from the Secret Circle trilogy by L.J. Smtih. What an incredibly strong younger female character. I so wanted to be her when I was in high school.
3. and 4. Stephan and Elena from the Vampire Diaries series by L.J. Smith - talk about high school vampire love at its finest. Stephenie Meyer must have read this series before writing hers.
5. Vin from Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. She is such a spunky character - fights for everything she has. No one thinks anything of her and of course she becomes the most powerful character in the book. She's also a little like Robin Hood - a moral thief.
I'll definitely be adding more to this list as I think of them.
If I haven't already read the book, I wait to read it until after I watch the movie. I figure that if I watch the movie first, I can enjoy both. I don't think I've ever been disappointed with a book after watching the movie, but I'm quite often disappointed by movies if I've already read the book. Some exceptions - Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, I loved the movie! Bridget Jones's Diary - I loved it, too. (I'm sure there are more exceptions, I just can't think of any at the moment.)
Eli and I had a wedding party at The Library in the South Side. They have a really nice upstairs that you can rent out and the food is quite tastey. Plus, if the weather is nice, they have an outdoor patio upstairs, too.
I just finished the book, too. Even though I didn't breeze through it, by the end I was really glad that I read it. It made me think about my own relationships with my friends and family and how I could improve them. It also made me think about how I interact with people in general. Mr. Rogers was an amazing person and an inspiration to me.
"I'm Proud of You" by Tim Madigan is the 2008 One Book, One Community selection. Has anyone read it yet or started to? I'm starting it this week. I really enjoyed the One Book, One Community selections in the past, especially "The Glass Castle" and "The Kite Runner." So, I'm looking forward to starting this one and I hope that it doesn't disappoint.
The movie The Namesake made me want to read the book. They were both excellent and I highly recommend them!
