28257 Welcome, Sue! I live not too far from Buffalo but on the other side of the border in Canada. Our most active thread is our currently reading thread where members let us know what they're reading. They're not always comfort reads but I think we all love it because we get tons of great reading suggestions.

28257 I started Old Man's War the other day and thought the dialogue and characters were just awful, really stiff and odd. So distracting! So, I think I'm going to dump it. I just began another book with much more promise - The River of No Return. The writing is a hundred times better and I was hooked from the first page. Yay!

28257 Tonight I finished the fifth and most satisfying book in another mystery series I've been enjoying by author Elly Griffiths. The characters and their relationships are what make these books interesting more so than the actual plot or mystery. A Dying Fall

28257 I ended up ditching The Bat. From the reviews it seems the series gets better but I didn't feel like wasting any more time on the first when I was completely unengaged. So, on to some young adult, fantasy, brain candy!!! Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder, the author who wrote Poison Study. There's nothing like magical healing powers to pick up your mood on a Friday afternoon!

28257 Not sure what's up next, I want to say I'm starting Flaggermusmannen because the English title is "The Bat" and it sounds cool! This is the first in a series of Norwegian mysteries.

28257 Last night I finished a fantastic post-apocalyptic read with a smart, kick-ass, female, main character.

28257 Last night I started Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. I'm hoping to like it, the writing is good but I'm not sure if the story and the way it's written will grab me yet.

28257 Andrew, I love that series! Once Miles gets introduced, which I believe is in the 3rd book of the series, things get really fun and funny.

28257 I'm now reading some fantasy by an author I haven't picked up in a while. I'm starting Troubled Waters by Sharon Shinn.

28257 I am reading Off-Topic: The Story of an Internet Revolt which is available for free and can be downloaded (or read online) on the book page. For anyone interested in recent events on Goodreads and the censorship scandal, I'd recommend it.

28257 Last night I started The House of the Wind: A Novel which is one of these books that interweaves a contemporary and historical story. I'm not even sure how this came home from the library with me because it doesn't have a particularly good rating here. Oh well, I'll give it a go and see what happens!

28257 I ended up watching the movie after I finished the book and I definitely preferred the book. I think that's usually the way it goes though, isn't it?

28257 So, I finished The Shuttle and kept going with another old fashioned comfort read by the same author - The Making of a Marchioness. I'm enjoying having access to the free classics on my new kindle.

Today I started Captain Vorpatril's Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold who writes great adventure/sci-fi/romance! I'm ripping through this one even though it doesn't feature the always amusing Miles Vorkosigan but his cousin instead.

28257 Leslie wrote: "I am doing what I call a DIScomfort read -- Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg. Its painful to read about how much further women have to go before equality (pay, promotions, etc). But its had one really ..."

That's pretty cool about your husband, Leslie! I hope he succeeds with his campaign.

28257 Jennifer, Edith Wharton is one my favourite authors. Thanks for the recommendation about The Age of Desire. I'd love to learn more about her life. I've had that Lydia Cassatt book on my to-read shelf for a long time too. Must take a look!

28257 I'm about to start The Good Son which I hope won't be disappointing. I need a good comfort read!

28257 I'm actually having fun going through all my goodreads shelves and cleaning them up. I look at the books I added five years ago and even though I'm sure I'll never get around to reading them I'm reluctant to delete a lot of them. I guess you know you're among friends when you consider organizing virtual shelves a fun and relaxing way to spend time!!!

28257 Susanna, that does sound fascinating! I'm going to check that out.
