2779 Thanks Des for the recommendation. Hope I can find it in English.
Maybe you could also add it here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1309...
under the Switzerland catagory.

2779 Stef, I agree, Pinocchio is worth reading! I read it to my kids a few years ago and we all loved it.

2779 Thanks Noane, for catching that, I did mean Joseph Roth. The Radetzky March wasn't a great hit in my book club, but I liked it a lot and would like to read more by him . . . so many books, so little time!

2779 Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge. Ok, this is a children's book, but I read it to my daughter when she was young (and we were living in Belgium-not too far away) and I really appreciated the history and descriptions of the area.

2779 The Radetzky March by Joseph March. I thought The Piano Teacher was pretty strange, too, but I read it for a book club and was living in Vienna at the time, so I finished it.

2779 The Good Master by Kate Seredy is a children's book set in pre-war Hungary. I also recommend the Paul Street Boys by Ferenc Molnar, as well as Upon the Head of the Goat: A Childhood in Hungary 1939-1944 and Under the Frog: A Novel
