Thanks Des for the recommendation. Hope I can find it in English.
Maybe you could also add it here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1309...
under the Switzerland catagory.

Stef, I agree, Pinocchio is worth reading! I read it to my kids a few years ago and we all loved it.
Thanks Noane, for catching that, I did mean Joseph Roth. The Radetzky March wasn't a great hit in my book club, but I liked it a lot and would like to read more by him . . . so many books, so little time!
Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge. Ok, this is a children's book, but I read it to my daughter when she was young (and we were living in Belgium-not too far away) and I really appreciated the history and descriptions of the area.
The Radetzky March by Joseph March. I thought The Piano Teacher was pretty strange, too, but I read it for a book club and was living in Vienna at the time, so I finished it.
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón takes place in Barcelona. Though not my favorite book, most people really love it.
The Good Master by Kate Seredy is a children's book set in pre-war Hungary. I also recommend the Paul Street Boys by Ferenc Molnar, as well as Upon the Head of the Goat: A Childhood in Hungary 1939-1944 and Under the Frog: A Novel
