I read Tracy Daugherty's Axeman's Jazz a few years ago after reading about it in the Houston Press. It's set in the Fourth Ward (my old 'hood) and is set partly in the present and partly in the past. It deals primarily with race and gentrification and is very worth reading. Here's a link:
