Hey Joey - looks like you woke everybody up last month, but it September now and I hope everyone joins in again. I am currently reading "Caramelo" for my book club, but have put it aside to delve into "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle".
I have a suggestion for Beth since you are on a nonfiction/dog book trend. Have you read Merle's Door? I have it in my To Read List if you want to check it out. Folks that have read it tell me it's very good.
Hi everyone - just booked a trip to Boston in early August to go to the Newport, Rhode Island Jazz Festival with one of my girlfriends. Will also spend a few days with my parents and will make a stop at Mikes Pastrys too!
Joey - I am from Boston originally, so that's home to me. Did you get your Red Sox tix already? If you've never been, there's nothing like a game at Fenway Park. As for book stores, there's a great Borders on State Street; if you're looking for more "indi" type book stores, you may want to check out the Cambridge area. Lots of great places to photograph as well. If the weather is good, it's a great city to see "on foot"...be sure to check out the North End - go hungry, it's the Italian section and in addition to great restaurants, they have some of the best coffee houses - go to Mike's Pastry for a "lobster tail" and Caffe Vitoria for a latte, both on Hanover Street!
In the midst of another heatwave here in LA (it's making me a little nervous that we've had two heat waves and it's only mid-May). Anyway, a great day to lounge around outside, sip on a refreshing cool cocktail and read read read all day long .....reality check, it's Monday and I have to work, work work!
Hi Bree - glad you enjoyed your visit to the west coast. One of my friends came to visit me April 24 to April 28 from Boston so we could attend the LA Times Festival of Books. It was so hot that weekend, sounds like you missed the hot spell. well over 90 degrees. Anyhow, the Festival of Books was terrific, as always. She went back to Boston where the weather has not been good either. Where is home for you?
Today is overcast in LA; the marine layer has landed.
Good morning from Marina del Rey California. Got up and went to the gym this morning; i am looking forward to "springing ahead" the time change in a couple of weeks so it will not be dark at 6 a.m. when I get up, and at 6 p.m. when I head home...
Good afternoon (sorry I'm a bit behind). Today was a beautiful day in Southern California. We had been having rain and cold, today is the first really beautiful day in a long time-
I have to send my condolences along to Bree giving up the caffeine. I know the headaches you are talking about; only did it one time, because I was fasting for a morning medical appointment. UGH! Never again (which is kind of scary, guess I am addicted to coffee and books, but I guess that's what this particular group is all about!)
Take care, Bree.
I had a glorious day yesterday - wasn't 37 degrees in LA, may have been 57, but it was very gloomy and very rainy. Called in sick, brewed a cup of tea (only because of a bad stomach, otherwise it's ALWAYS coffee!), climbed back into bed and read, napped, read, napped....ahhhh. And my current read is so good, I was able to plow through a good chunck of it!
I am reading The Rice Mother by Rani Manicka. It is from 2002 and I knew nothing of it until it was selected by my "live" book club for our February/March read. I think it is a very powerful book, a page turner, beautifully written, with each "part" written in the voice of a different character. I am on page 106.
Hi Joey -
Just joined this group. I like how you have posted the spoiler alert rule and everyone here seems polite, even when there are differences in opinion (which is expected). Looks like you have a great group here.
