2704 I hate to admit this - no, I don't know a thousand songs, but I do put on my makeup while driving. :( I know I know - I'm a menace - don't drive 64E around 6 a.m. weekdays, ok? :) But the driving and makeup thing is very true, or plausible, perhaps.

2704 Hey Kim - what are you studying and where? I'm finishing (next fall, thank God) my Masters in Reading which I only took because I thought it would make me better qualified to be an English teacher - - - but all that they taught us about were really young children - and I work with middle and high school students! I'm taking a writing class this semester - a ton of work writing and reading, but I love the classes.

2704 I haven't started it yet, either - planning for a new unit at school on writing and short stories. Anyone have any short stories that have grabbed you and might grab a 13-15 year old??? Or remember ones that you learned in school that you'd suggest?

2704 Hey Cate!

No - no loss on the vampiric front - I just read Mistress of the Art of Death - it was good - set in 12th century Cambridge, England under Henry II, it involves almost a CSI like female doctor and some Jews who are being persecuted - and children dying - and it's just remarkable - it's really good. The end is lovey - so it's a little soft at the end - but it kept me reading til I finished it. Now I think I'm going to, in an ungainly manner, segue into Giffen's newest book or another male-female light relationship compilation of short stories. Can't think of the author - wrote Good in Bed.

2704 Maureen -

I have all the books and won't give them away because I love them so. The only thing that I'm disappointed in is that they've made the show a "film noir" version - and left out the funniness that I think Harris imbues the stories with. I think I might reread them - if I can get them in now that school's open - because I have loved them so much. Yeah - they are staying pretty close to the grain with the plot, though. Your Mom is right. :)

2704 Well - the last time people threw out ideas - and then we all just came to a consensus on what we wanted to do. Everyone read Twilight this month. I'm looking forward to the new book. I just finished Mistress of the Art of Death for my work book club and that was good. Well - put out any suggestions you have and people will vote on them.

2704 Hey Cameron!

Hope you've found the answer to the zombie uprising - I could use it in my dealings with NN 8th graders! ;)

2704 Hello Hanna and Cate! Some non-natives to join the group - wonderful!

2704 Oooh - no cable? You're a strong woman! :) I don't watch as much t.v. as I'd like to (now that sounds ridiculous). I mean - I want to watch True Blood all of the time - but I forget or fall asleep. I need to get a DVR for Christmas for my boyfriend - then he can program my shows for me! ;) Well he's gotten me gifts for "us" that were really for "him." lol Just returning the favor.

2704 I really like it - but my imagination with the novel was so much better and I think the novels are also funny - not straigt horror - and the way that Eric and Pam "floated" away from Fangtasia - they just moved quickly in the book - they could have blurred the two of them - had them stop briefly to talk to Sukie - and then blurred them again and have them disappear. Well - I'm being too picky - I have a hard time loving the film and t.v. versions of the books I read!!! :) But I can't wait to watch Twilight when it hits the movie theaters. Speaking of movies - anyone seen The Express? I've got to go and see that, though I know I'll cry.

2704 LOL - me too! ;)

2704 I've read the series too - but would really like to discuss - particularly as my students are reading the series. I wasn't sure about giving them the last book - because of some of what happens - but the library had a copy - so I gave them my copy. :)

2704 I'm watching True Blood too - it's based on Charlaine Harris' series on Sookie Stackhouse - they are so awesome and funny. They've taken all of the funny out of TB though. It's pseudo-scary - but not really - and that thing with Eric and Pam levitating out of the bar - just looked corny. :( It's on Thursdays and Sundays - do you know if it's the same show both days? I've been able to catch one or the other but not both in one week.

2704 Ok Joey - I read Jigsaw Man - somehow I missed that it was a horror book when I looked it up. But anyway - it was ok, but I wasn't horrified (about which I'm glad because I have a really vivid imagination and it would've haunted me for days if it had been). It was ok. I'm overall ok with how it ended, too.

Now on to Athena's something, Kim. :)

2704 I'm ok with Twilight - I've already read it! :)
Sep 18, 2008 03:49AM

2704 Kim - I read the excerpts on Stealing Athena and have ordered it - so maybe I'll go from Jigsaw Man to Athena - man to woman! :)

I look forward to whatever may come - and to talking to you two about the books. When I'm not in over my head with a poetry unit that I have to design from scratch. :)

Ok - talk to you all soon!

2704 Yeah - maybe we all DO need an adrenaline fix! I know I do - school started and grad school and there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done! :)

Well - I'll have both books by the weekend - so either way we can read either and I'm set. I'm only interested in the Puppy Chow because I've read some memoirs about depression and bipolar because my uncle is bipolar and my sister is depressed. Ok - she has clinical depression - she's not just depressed! :) lol

What do you think, Kim?

Is this group usually this small? I like it - it's easy to know everybody - I'm just curious. :)

2704 I just looked up Jigsaw Man - it looks good - I ordered it. This sounds like a good start. At least it's not A Million Tiny Pieces (which I loved loved loved until it was exposed - and then I felt so dumb). But I ramble - so I'm in!

2704 I'm waiting to hear, too. And have a possible gf who wants to join, too. Any suggestions yet? I just picked up "Puppy Chow is better than Prozac" but I'm not sure if anyone else is interested in reading that. :)
Aug 21, 2008 03:50AM

2704 I'm glad you liked Puppy Chow is Better than Prozac - I've just ordered it. If you're at all interested in bipolar, read the book, "The Unquiet Mind" by Kay Redfield (Jameson?) - look up Unquiet Mind and you'll find it. It's the best look at being bipolar that I've ever come across.
