A Pelt A Shrub A Soil Sample by Ross Brighton
Zero Ducats:a new journal filled with treasures
A Pelt A Shrub A Soil Sample by Ross Brighton Despite the slim length of this chapbook, there is an ambitious impulse here to account for the variety, splendor, and strangeness of the natural world. Yes, this is nature poetry, but nature seen through the sophisticated lens of an Objectivist. Drawings by Annie Mackenzie. from Neoismist Press

Nate Pritts: Honorary Astronaut
Carrie Adams: Intervening Absence
Cara Benson: Up
Kathy Burkett: Pieces of Sissy Lee
Spinning off from the sure-handed quirkiness of his debut volume, SENSATIONAL SPECTACULAR, poet Nate Pritts returns with HONORARY ASTRONAUT. His sophomore book of poems builds on the themes and energies of his first book – mixing the verve and excitement of the surreal into the every day world we all share – while charting bold new ground in poetics. With a strong vein of Romantic earnestness, Pritts literally busts through these poems, launching the tired speaker from the earthly ground we all share into a shocking new atmosphere where love and friendship are all that matter and they somehow don’t quite matter enough.
In INTERVENING ABSENCE Carrie Olivia Adams delves into a space defined by air and sky, each movement another scene of a movie re-filmed many times over. Intervening Absence, a series of sequences that question silence and interaction (and which both stand alone and themselves interact), is a work of strong architectural integrity populated by speakers whose vulnerability is extreme. Adams writes, “The poems wait, lie still. The poems creep and jump forward. The poems tense and relax their muscles. They interact with the unseen, the wished for, and the undeniably present. I can only hope that in their whispers to you they intervene.” These poems calmly announce a realm of interrupted conversations with the self as moving pictures projected on parlor walls, where Adams engages the idea of pause and distance.
UP by Cara Benson, published by Mark Lamoureux. In a world in crisis P is d, and U becomes a smile upside down--yes, a frown. Or perhaps the knowing wink of a cartoon character. The cover page of “UP” designed by Mark Lamoureux is a yield sign where "UP" inverted creates cognitive dissonance. For example the cognitive dissonance of a mind understanding implications of a warming climate and yet its failure to yield. This is a ditty, an uncomforting one, where “under foot lost.” A chap to hear and know and see and then “Get UP.”
PIECES OF SISSY LEE: A journey into the mind of fictional character Sissy Lee through altered pages, poems, journal fragments, and collages. A published altered book by Kathryn Burkett.
