233 Dad

Off he would go before we awoke,
plunging into dark mornings, invisible
as the large trout he swore lurked deep
in shadow under riverbank shelves of stone.

They are mixed blessings, such mythical fish:
catch one and you’re in for the battle of your life.

Dappled day would offer shallow treasures
to be plucked, bartered, hoarded, or spent
until the breathless moment when he opened
evening’s door trailing thickening clouds of night

and hooked us into the vortex of unfathomable storm
that had swallowed him whole before we were born.
