I'd recommend Bone by Jeff Smith. Its a pretty good fantasy series with a lot of whimsey. The entire run is available as one $40 volume.
Don't think of in terms of getting old, think of it in terms of your tastes maturing resulting in getting more selective, which I think is a good thing.
I recommend to anyone on a budget to check out their local libraries. I've saved a lot of money raiding my library for all sorts of graphic novels that I otherwise would of have bought to read, and probably only read once, and then sell it at a significantly lower price on half.com. And if your library is part of a bigger system in your area, then you're really in luck.
The thing is, even "soulless corporate bookstore chains" support the local economy by employing people. I use discount coupons from Borders all the time. And both my local comic book stores offer me discounts on trades and hardcovers. So when I buy, it usually depends on who has what and what I'm in the mood to read. I stopped buying individual issues years ago to save money, especially since I'm more likely to reread collections.
