I fear that I may be outgrowing my childhood love of comic books, or least my ability to stomach badly-written comics about superheroes.
I still eat up the well-written ones, like Invincible or Madman, but the general ones just aren't grabbing me anymore, and I find I'm enjoying older comics more, and in a historical context, rather than for anything else.
Yes, this does in fact make me feel old. :(
I just don't get quite the enjoyment out of them lately, and have been more likely to look for underground and indie stuff instead, or at least stuff that's not from the big two. I'm even a little non-plussed on the Vertigo material.
So yeah, I may be at a comics crisis of my own at a time when DC seems to think that's a yearly occurrence. I'm not exactly sure what to think about it, either. Any ideas from the peanut gallery?

Ugh, I thought Seven Soldiers was Morrison at his worst--too far reaching, not as clever as he thought it would be, and ending with a crash rather than a bang.Parts of it were interesting, but overall I felt it missed the mark. I may see if it works better collected than it did over a LOT of single issues.

Doom Patrol, first two trades. Some of Morrison's best work, in terms of creating new and wonderous things, working within existing norms, and clever wordplay. They are great!-Rob
Castle waiting may be the best thing I read all year. The collected edition is amazing. I need to get that review up on here soon...-Rob
Also Doug TenNapel's graphic novels are interesting, though perhaps a bit too moralized for some. Reviews of three of them are in my books list in the graphic novels section.-Rob
Speaking of Joan Sfar, I'd add the Dungeon books to this list. A great series that really tweaks the nose of the genre of heroic medieval/magic fantasy with a very nice plot. And the translation is excellent.
I think the first Volume is superior to the second one, but yeah, that Bizarro Comics stuff is great!
Fun Home was great, glad to see it won an Eisner. Batman Year 100 was really good, though, so I don't have a problem with it winning overall. Sometimes I think the non-superhero graphic novel readers are just as bad as only-superhero graphic novel readers at failing to see the other side's virtues. ;)
I have to admit, I find Yang's work a bit too preachy for my taste, though I did really like American Born Chinese.
