220 Lobstergirl, No, it's not. I either message the person (since it's just one in this case) or I combine it with a/the most popular work by that author and delete it. I think some simply delete.

220 If the quiz will be for just people applying to be librarians, I would appreciate it if it was posted somewhere for current librarians to look at it. I'd like to at least view any quizzes to assure myself that I know everything I need to know. I'd like to think that other librarians would want to do the same. The fact is that all the errors that have been made and that are motivating Goodreads to require a quiz are being made by current librarians. I don't mind us being exempt from taking the quiz, but I'd like the questions/answers available to all librarians. Thanks for listening.

220 Oh, ok. Thanks Melody. That's weird though because there was not near the number of works for Not a book as there used to be last time I checked for NOT A BOOK. Also, immediately as I changed the author to NOT A BOOK when the book's title page came back on screen it showed as Not a book.

220 Carolyn, This just started happening to me today.

If it's going to continue to happen (I don't know but it's why I asked) I guess that NOT A BOOK author should be merged with/changed to Not a book.

Edit: It just started happening to me today but it looks as though the author's name for NOT A BOOK has changed to Not a book for some, but not all, old entries/changes too.

220 I just marked some items with NOT A BOOK for the author and I noticed that these changed automatically to "Not a book" as did many other NOT A BOOK authors.

Does anybody know why. Is Goodreads doing this deliberately?

Should we be marking NAB items with the author as Not a book and NOT A BOOK. I do believe these will show up as 2 different authors. Not that it really matters I suppose, as these items aren't books.

220 JG, Got it.

220 I'd say yes, delete those editions, as long as there's an identical edition with more information, which is the case with this book. Edit: Oh, and as long as you make sure to combine the editions that belong together before deleting. This one is ready to go.

220 I know huge messes can be made with incorrect combining. At least the editions and books remain in the database.

I'd love it if only certain librarians could delete books, either only editions of books or even one of many editions. Book editions and sometimes the only edition of a book are at least occasionally being improperly removed from the Goodreads database.

220 I'd vote yes to lock also but the problem goes beyond that.

Many of my manually added editions of old books (with detailed information in the books' description fields!) have been deleted and I've noticed many authors with incorrectly combined works, although most of the ones I've found are much easier to separate correctly than Doyle.

I think, despite the helpful manual and this group, that there are some librarians who don't know what they're doing. Of course, I've made mistakes too but I've been noticing mistakes on a grander and grander scale; they seem to be getting worse.

So, I resurrect the idea of having more qualifications for librarians or more closely monitoring librarians who have made more than their fair share of errors.

220 Ok, Thanks Dori. And thank you for noticing.

220 Jude,

Re your message 501. No:

The first one is already designated as NOT A BOOK. It has an ISBN and should not be deleted, or is it not listed at Amazon at all?

The second one has an ISBN and appears to be a book. I'll change the author name to the proper name. Edit: Which I did and then combined it with the other editions.

220 Thanks, Cait. Of course.

220 Eva, Some of the Persian editions of books do show up with those early dates. I'm sure I should know the reason but I don't remember why this happens.
11 days ago, 05:36PM

220 Well, it looks as though Twilight was published in 2005. What's wrong with the date? They all say original publication date is 2005 and this edition shows a 2005 publication date; I don't know if the date for this edition is correct, as translations sometimes come out in later years, but what do you see Dori that arouses your suspicion?

220 I thought we generally went without titles such as Captain. Edit: My 2ยข: I'd keep the Sully though.

220 Chichipio, That message of mine was sent out to everyone; I wasn't singling you out at all. Your message just reminded me to post. Of course, where I posted in this thread it probably won't be seen by most of the members who should read it. Thanks.

220 Hmm. Well, there's no ISBN but it seems to be a specific edition:

published 2004 (first published 1933) by Wordsworth Editions Limited
12 days ago, 08:28AM

220 I got them Eva. Thanks. It would be easier to have the link to the book page than the link to the edit book page though. It's harder from the edit page to see that those editions are already combined with others, etc. Thanks.

220 Please also be careful to not delete old books. I've noticed several of my manually added pre-ISBN books, often with covers have been deleted. I'll come upon a book on my shelves and my edition is gone, and it had often been shelved by multiple members.

220 Oh, I'm very sorry. Thanks, Rivka for fixing it!
