As a person whose first language isn't English, I want to second what Zala and Rivka says.
If the various different language edition of books are not combined, it to me destroys the purpose of goodreads. When I read books in my native language - Danish - I want to be able to see who else has read that book, whatever language they've read it in so I can find friends based on that and see other people's thoughts on the book etc.
So these books definitely should be combined.

Okay, there seems to me to be a problem with a lot of John Steinbeck's works.
The description in many of them go something like this:
"Today, nearly forty years after his death, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures. We have begun publishing his many works for the first time as blackspine Penguin Classics featuring eye-catching, newly commissioned art. This season we continue with the seven spectacular and influential books East of Eden, Cannery Row, In Dubious Battle, The Long Valley, The Moon Is Down, The Pastures of Heaven, and Tortilla Flat. Penguin Classics is proud to present these seminal works to a new generation of readers—and to the many who revisit them again and again."
And not just in one or two editions - the ten or so editions of Sweet Thursday I checked, was all identical and it seems to be a problem as well with Tortilla Flat. I would prefer to change it to actual descriptions of the book - as a reader, I don't really care that Penguin is re-issuing them, when I don't know what they are about ... What do other librarians think?

I do get your point, Not the Michael, but I think that in the Clancy case there are a rather easy to follow chronological order that follows Jack Ryan's career - and the ones I've read are better if you read them in that order because otherwise some things make less sense...
I don't know - I'm not sure what I think would be the best solution to this chaos.

What would you do about an author like Tom Clancy? There is a chronological order to his Jack Ryan series but that is far from the publishing order. I just took a quick look at him and it don't seem like any of the books in this series are labelled as being a part of that series.
My take on it is to label them chronologically ... Any other takes on this?

No unfortunately not.
I've pointed this out before and I'm not sure if it's being worked on or not...

We talked in another topic about what to call authors (ie. Howard Philip Lovecraft or H.P. Lovecraft) and the funny thing is that you guys call him Hans Christian Andersen and here in his home country, we call him H.C. Andersen...!

But I guess that Goodreads is still primarily for english language books so we should probably stick with the Hans Christian and not H.C.

And I hope the Anderson in the title of this topic is just a spelling mistake ... ;-)

It could be added in the 'about the author' area that Richard Bachman is a pen name for Stephen King.
However, there might be a problem with this since apparently some of the Richard Bachman books are later published with Stephen King on the cover...
Not quite sure what to do about that.

And Ubik, I agree with you on Lovecraft. He should be on here as H.P. Lovecraft. When people talk about him, that's what they use. The book I'm currently reading by him also says H.P. Lovecraft and I looked at a few other covers and they said H.P. as well.
So if there's no objections, I'll change it in the morning (unless someone beats me to it...).

It's an issue with a lot of Danish writers (Peter Høeg, Cæcilie Lassen, Per Højholt among others) so I just wanted to make sure that I was doing the correct thing when I changed them to the Danish spelling...

I'm from Denmark and in Denmark, we have three letters not in the English alphabet: æ ø å
I'm curious as to what to do when correcting Danish book titles and author with these letters because goodreads seems to have a hard time with these when you search - and also, can English speaking users search for these authors if I correct them?
One author this could be a problem with is Cæcilie Lassen who is listed as Caecilie Lassen - that is ae instead of the correct æ.
Should this be corrected or will it create too much trouble???

I always add the date as well so haven't noticed that ... it's an annoying bug!

Nope - and it still bugs me. I have a couple of authors that I go check on every couple of months to see if I'm able to correct it so they are not born on January 1st, but so far no luck :-(

I prefer Book Title (Series Book 4)

I am fluent in Danish and basic in German.
Since Swedish and Norvegian is rather close to Danish, I'm pretty much fluent in those languages as well.
I also have a small French vocabulary - enough to do some corrections and combinations in that language as well.

I understand why you would want to do it like that, Lisa - but I just don't like it...
I want my shelves to be correct and to reflect the accurate number of books I've read (that's why I haven't added anything I read before I became a member) so I don't want Anna Karenina to count as two books...
I admit that I'm a bit of a control freak with this - but taken that into consideration, don't you think my idea of adding the two volumes as one book and noting it in the description, will be the best way to do it?

Exactly - but when I have read both vol. 1 and 2 of my Anna Karenina, I have read the entire book and I would like to have my version linked with all the other Anna Kareninas out there.
That's why I suggest putting them up as one book but stating that it's a two-volume version...

I've been wondering this as well.
I have a Danish translation of "Anna Karenina" in two volumens and I'm not sure how to add it and how to combine it.
I don't want it to count as two books so I've been thinking about adding it with the cover for volume one (only difference between the two volumes is the color) and then writing in the description that it's a two-volume edition of this book.
Any thoughts?
