220 Sorry - by 'merge' I meant I merged the reviews. If you look the book in message 1 has no reviews anymore.

220 Fixed the book in question by merging it with this one: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18...

220 Good catch! We'll fix that asap.

220 Hi everyone,

I guess we were hoping multiple covers on the same ISBN was a relatively rare occurrence, but I guess its not as rare as we hoped!

The correct thing for us to do would be to allow a book to have multiple covers. We'll add that to our todo list, but its low priority. In the meantime, I think that the cover reflected should probably be that of the more recent publication - as it sounds like earlier versions are more temporary. If this doesn't ring right, chime in.

Similarly, as books don't have to have an ISBN on Goodreads, I'd suggest listing the ISBN on the most recent version, and leaving earlier versions with no ISBN. Then they can all be combined.

Message 8: I agree to list both authors, and the note posted sounds good. Hopefully the author AKA feature will take care of this in the future.
220 She actually added a review of the correct version later, so I just went ahead and deleted the duplicate.

220 Rivka is right - we grant librarian status to anyone who signs up as an author. Listing that status on the author profile looked strange, so we omitted it.
Mar 19, 2008 01:13PM

220 Gotcha - that description was broken because there wasn't a closing i or b tag. We will fix that in the next release!
Mar 15, 2008 07:10PM

220 fxd!
Mar 15, 2008 06:59PM

220 You are correct Rivka, we don't replace existing data. The only exception to that is sometimes we refresh data from Amazon (descriptions, covers, etc), but only if nobody on the site has changed them.
Mar 14, 2008 06:26PM

2919 Looks like the new change tracker didn't like dates before 1900. I think we fixed it for the next release.

220 I would agree with Rivka. Our database is set to pull things in from Amazon that have ISBN's, so any box set for sale there would appear here. It seems funny to let what Amazon sells dictate or policy, but I actually think it ends up being a good rule. Saying 'everything by Stephen King' is even worse, because then you're just saying you are a fan of his work. Maybe we need a 'add all works by this author to my shelves' button?

Mar 14, 2008 05:14PM

220 That is a good point Jacinda. The answer is that there aren't plans for that, but that there is no reason anyone who is notable shouldn't be in the authors database. So far the only way to add them is add a book by them. However we might need to address another way for authors of quotes that aren't authors of books.

220 Figured it out. It didn't actually break anything, but it did look strange. Will be fixed next release!
Mar 08, 2008 04:12PM

220 Sorry about that everyone! It's fixed now.
Mar 08, 2008 03:29PM

220 At the current state of things, yes. We're hiring for software engineers now though, and that may change things :)
Mar 07, 2008 12:41PM

220 Hi John,

That sounds very strange. Do you mean the author profile or just the author image? Can you give me a specific example of which book you were on?

Mar 07, 2008 12:39PM

220 It looks like for some reason we had only fixed it for the edit author page. Guess we weren't thinking hard that day! Book page fix is coming right up in our next release (in 10 min).
Mar 07, 2008 12:01PM

541 All fixed: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/84...

The rule is there because what you're doing is actually deleting a book from the database, and if a book is popular enough we need to be careful with who we allow to do that. 10 is a low number though - perhaps it should be raised slightly?
Mar 07, 2008 11:48AM

220 lol. You are totally right Rivka!

I'll have to do something about that :)

220 Michael is right - we've been tracking who edited what for some time, but only yesterday finally figured out how to track the exact changes.
