I have one great-great --- I don't recall how many greats grandfather whose family smuggled at least one slave into Canada by hiding her in a false bottom of a wagonload of reeds sold to furniture manufacturers for woven reed seats and backs in chairs. Another of that family actually patented a reed splitting machine of some sort for this purpose. Another collateral line relative joined up with a group which found this slave before the official posse could find her and he then took her to the other relatives to hide and transport. This all came from stories written up in local history books a generation or two or three after the action but I'd love to find more on the story.
What a clever utilization of a fascinating pastime -- hobby -- obsession -- whatever we want to label this thing which grabs hold of us and doesn't let go. All good wishes that you will make that connection before your book is published.
Smith -- two different ones on the maternal lines and one on my paternal lines -- Gardner, Hoppess, Hysell, Hubbell, Caldwell, Little, and Bellows. Mercer, Perkins, Sells and Barrett.
Counties -- Meigs, Gallia, Washington, Vinton. Belmont. Guernsey.
My Smith and Hubbell lines go back to the Blockhouse at Marietta and then to New England but there's a scramble in the lines and I've yet to find the way to untangle things. I did however see their names on the list of people living there when we visited the site and the museum there in 2004 -- that was quite an experience.
Paternal lines I have some back into New Jersey in the 1790's with births there as early as 1730's and back to Mainz, Germany. But as yet I've not been able to locate documentation for each step.
Then there's the other corner with Brown, Clermont and Darke and Butler. Names there include Thompson, Berger, Ingle, Gardner, Little and a bunch more that I've lost track of in the time I've been away from my research.
South Eastern Ohio, eh? Name names. Name places. Name time periods. And if you'd rather send me this in a private message through my profile -- please.
I have South Eastern and South Western OH both and several lines in each and some in both areas.
Have little time for genie right now but am chomping at the bit to get back at it after too long away from it. LOVE the history aspect of it as you point out.
Sara -- I just attended a day long genie gathering and will post a couple of map sites as soon as I pull the syllabus out of the briefcase and get it in here to the computer -- I ordered one software program which covers the US and some other areas -- I think Canada is included. More later and if you need to jog this up -- do so. I tend to get sidetracked.
Don't you just have to LOVE it when you fall into those connections with a big chunk of research which happens to be your line as well as the person who did the work? It is also great fun when such a connection solves a riddle for both parties.
I had the same thing happen -- found a man who had written a book on one my lines and that took me all the way back to the 1600's in Switzerland -- I was amazed -- but then it also opened a few new questions which I now need to resolve. That's the way it works -- a big step forward and a few steps back.
Hi, Sara! Excellent question on the historical maps book.
My own heritage has taken me back to these countries:
England
Germany
Ireland
Scotland
France (possibly)
Switzerland
It's a fascinating pasttime this genealogical searching.
Okay -- so are all members new genealogical folks or have you all been researching for a while?
I had been being pushed to research family for a while in junior high and high school but ignored it for the most part. then when I was older and the elders who were urging me into it were gone I wished I'd not ignored it. The usual genealogical lament.
Then I formed a new best friendship with a fellow parent in the neighborhood and in our conversations we discovered we were both into researching family tree -- and away we went -- we went at it for a decade or so and then it got lost in life events until recently since we are both now retirees. In fact husband and I will join her and her husband in February at a day long genie seminar in their town a ways north from us and we are kicking around the idea of a week sojourn with help in Salt Lake City just to get motivated if nothing else developes.
Off to check out the books listed!
