I have heard the name Delores shortned to "Lolly" and "Lolita" would be a deminitive of Lolly. It's a Spanish thing, the "ita".However, it would be pronounce with the long sound 'o' in Spanish, not like lolipop, so yes, HH was showing his pompousity when he said her name outloud.
Is Lolita considered a main character in that book?
I think Humbert Humbert is definitely the main character. Lolita, poor thing, is merely a pawn.
I discovered I've read almost all of the top 10! I usually don't do that well on lists of "books you must read" but apparently I'm great at reading "books you mustn't read!" :)Funny -- I was thinking just about the same thing!
I'm ready to read just about anything you choose, Kelly. I'd love for this to be a reading group where we start on a given date and are able to read and talk about the book as the month goes on. Without all the worry about 'spoilers'. After all, most of those on banned lists are books we know quite a bit about. Has the way the book club will work been designed yet?

Oh, I want in, too. yay!
Although I have to say I've never quite figured out how to use this forum well. Perhaps this will be my golden opportunity to learn!!
Not that I think any book should be banned ... just telling a funny story. A second grade teacher where I work was reading some of the Captain Underpants books to her class. (you know what's coming) One day one of her more special little boys came back from the b.room with his underpants on outside his pants.
I'm not sure about the brewhaha that followed, but ... ya gotta love it when kids really get into their literature!!!!
