I *loved* The Wind-up Bird Chronicle. A bunch of on-line friends and I read it as sort of an informal book club. A bunch of the folks didn't care for it, because they said "it has no plot." My response: "Neither does an average year in anyone's life ... which is what this book is about. It's brilliant in that way." :-)
It's hard for me to pick just one favorite book, because I have read so many, LOL. I would say that two which have influenced me deeply were
The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Phantom of the Opera. Both of them have overarching themes of compassion toward those who are different from ourselves.
