I personally loved it. It gave you something to think about once it was over. What would it take for people to just turn into savages because they are confronted with something unnatural? It was also pretty interesting to see how everybody thought Mrs. Carmody was nuts at first but the more she proved that she was God's "vessel", the more people stopped thinking rationally. I disagree that Darabont should have left the ending hanging like in the book. I hate when you never know what happens to the characters. The ending was sad but the reason behind what happened and why was pretty clear.
Tom wrote: "I'm not sure I understand what you mean about Harry not learning anything from his previous life-threatening encounter with Voldemort. Can you elaborate?"He got by on luck and in the real world, that's not likely to help you make it through 7 years unscathed. He never seemed to take these brushes with death seriously and to me he never seemed to have learned anything from the last encounter. He never took away anything from the encounters. Everybody around him was evolving and changing but not him and I can kind of understand his relutance to change at all considering he didn't sign up for it.
For example, in Goblet of Fire, how was it that he got away from all these skilled wizards and Voldemort himself? Voldemort happened to have a wand that was Harry's brother and priori incantum took over and he got to see everybody that Voldie murdered and they helped him escape.
In Chamber of Secrets, he got out of it because Fawkes the Phoenix delivered him the Sorting Hat and Godric Gryffindors' sword. Voldemort was suppose to be this scary dude but this child thwarts you again and again by luck alone. Voldemort didn't learn either or he would have realized about Harry earlier than he did. I'm not saying I didn't like Harry but I'm saying he got out of things far too easily for somebody with so much hanging over his head.
Anamay wrote: "there is something about the fact that he never learns anything from the previous life threatening encounter with Voldemort that makes me follow this series.."That's pretty much my boss' reason for not watching the movies and not having enjoyed the books. He said he never learned anything from all these encounters with Voldie. He got by with luck and that's pretty much hard to believe that, even if it is fictional.
Besides that, I loved this series and this was one of my favorite books. I might have to wait for it to come on pay per view because if I spend $10 just to be disappointed, I'm not gonna be happy.
I think the best parts (in the book) were the Voldie flashbacks cuz we got a sense of who he was and what he was capable of at a young age. I liked the idea of horcruxes and Voldemort looking so disfigured because he divided his soul with each murder he committed. To be quite honest, Snape was the only character that grew in the series. Harry got by on luck alone and I didn't mind that because he was relucant anyway. He didn't want any part of this but had no choice and never fully understood who he was until he had no choice but to accept it.
Great book. It more than made up for the final one that I found extremely sad and unfulfilling.
I'm completely over any adaptation of Scrooge EXCEPT for the movie called Scrooged with Bill Murray. That's the only one I can tolerate. I can't get enough of Rudolf, Frosty, a Town without Santa Claus, though. I guess I like claymation better than real life. LOL
The Avengers. Uma Thurman, Ewan MacGregor and Sean Connery. We were like =O thruout the entire film, just confused and lost.
The Bodyguard was really, really good. Her voice is just..all you need. It was a really big album that year.
I have NOT seen it as an adult but I still think I'd be uninterested in it. Not saying it's not good. I just don't think it would be for me. I really don't think they should have remade it but they're remaking everything under the sun. I think they'll do some crazy Independence Day stuff (which was awesome but when did that come out again?) with this new one.
Kim, in this day you can't rat on someone to get your sentence reduced. It's an instant death sentence to do that. I find it funny that Nicky Barnes is suppose to be in the witness protection agency but he still talks to the press and everybody knows who he is. He was a huge snitch as well. Honestly, I would have done it too. Fuck that. I might get it one day but oh well, i'm out, you're in, i'm going to hell anyway so it doesn't matter!
I have honestly never seen Hoodlum or Cotton Club. I haven't even seen Harlem Nights. LOL. I'm interested in Laurence as Bumpy Johnson though.
I think you should see it. I've been watching it as much as I can and I've only been doing that with one other movie..Transformers! LOL. Blame it on me being an 80s kid but I love that movie.I'm really intrigued about him. That's terrible but damn. That was brilliant how he supplied Harlem with "Blue Magic". And how he got the supply there in the first place. Definitely a movie worth watching!
I thought this was a great movie. Denzel was good, Russell Crowe was good and the story remained true. Crazy that one man could accomplish all what Frank Lucas did and nobody ever even know who he was.
I didn't think it glamourized drug lords but I could see how it would be construed that way. Frank Lucas was pretty scary but he was pretty amazing at the same time. I think Denzel captured that PERFECTLY.
