I don't think I will live long enough to read everything I want to read! So, what I do is listen to the "fun" ones, on audiobooks! Then, I can read the more serious/meaty ones.
I have favorite authors that I read everything by. I have favorite subjects, like Oregon history that I will read anything that adds to my knowledge.
I'm one of those people who has to "make" myself do things just for fun, for no good reason. So after studying/reading indepth 2 books on Oregon history, I grabbed a fiction mystery.
I miss being intelligent, lol, so I am purposing more. I think to stretch my brain, I need to read a variety, that includes FUN.
Also, I like Goodreads friends for this, as i choose ones that I dont' have anything in common with.
the 1001 list is great too, because it helps me read what I wouldn't choose on my own.
re Balzac and the little chinese seamstress, you might enjoy a couple of the books I have on my list about this subject. When Broken Glass floats and the 3 swans. Sorry if have already read them, i didn't check your "read" list. I am putting Balzac and the little chinese seamstress on my to read.
cheers , mel

i like the blank book idea, at least i would have someone to talk to. (myself) ha ha

While Six Million Died: A Chronicle of American Apathy
A Question of Torture: CIA Interrogation, from the Cold War to the War on Terror

I have been using Goodreads incoordination with my online library requests/searches to figure out what I am reading.
This is a much better way as otherwise I get excited and check out too many & lost track and have overdue fines, lol.
Outside of goodreads, this year I chose some books from "Oregon reads" promotional.
I also do searches at the library site, online.
I have certain authors I will always read for fun.
The other books are specialty areas I am interested in/studying on my own.
Finally, I try to find a new book or author regularly to "stretch myself" and not get into a "reading rut."
