2051 Hmmm...interesting question. Well...

I will NEVER read anything by Ann Coulter. No way.

I won't read anything by James Patterson (I don't believe he even writes his own books anymore) or Sylvia Browne. I also have an aversion to Janet Evanovich. I probably won't read anymore Jodi Picoult - I thought My Sister's Keeper was awful.

I have been avoiding Twilight mainly because all of the fans are so annoying about how great it is, but I may cave and read it in a couple years when the fad has run its course.

I tried the first Shopoholic book and couldn't stand it. The main character was just ditzy and annoying. Hopefully it'll make a better movie.

That being said, I love the Harry Potter series, and Oprah tends to pick pretty good books. I've read Anthem by Ayn Rand and loved it - I haven't gotten a chance to read the others yet. I also read I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb and remember liking it, although it was at least 5 years ago, so maybe a re-read would change my mind.

2051 Finished # 18 finally! It shouldn't have taken me so long, but it was a busier week than normal. Onwards to 19...

I think that I'm so frustrated with Borders because it was SO much better the first year the program started. That first year, 5% of all of your purchases went into a holiday spending account, so that 5% of ALL your purchases was money you got back. It was great, I got like $30 back to spend that December. And then they changed it immediately because they realized it was actually good for customers. Also back then, the coupons were almost always 40% off. Now they're usually a lower percentage off, plus you have to spend at least a certain amount (usually $10). I miss those good ol' days!

Ohhhh how lucky! I miss my Waldenbooks discount :-(

I have thought about joining a trading site, but I only get rid of a book maybe once or twice a year. I can't bear to part with the ones I have :o)

However to avoid the high cost of books these days, I try whenever possible to use the library used bookstore, or I'll look on ebay or Amazon if I need something specific and don't mind if it's used.

2051 Ha, luckily my honeyman has a new video game that he's excited about, so he'll do that while I read :o)

Did you see the "Let the Right One In" movie? I saw the movie first because it was playing at a theater in my town, and it was pretty good. Once I read the book (which my boyfriend read first and loved), I was frustrated with all of the different view points. However by the end I realized that they were all in some way important, and I was impressed that the author actually got me to change my mind about it - it's hard to change a reader's opinion once they've made it.

If you enjoy Christopher Moore, you should put "Lamb" on your to-read list for this year. I think it's his funniest - I just could not stop cracking up!

2051 Congrats! I'm not even close to my halfway point.

How did you like Let the Right One In and the Christopher Moore novels?

Greece! LOL but I work in Webster. Wow, small world and all that jazz, huh?

2051 I buy mostly from my local library's used bookstore. And they also hold a huge semi-annual sale in my mall, which is great. I also shop online if I need something hard-to-find, or I go to B&N or Borders.

Is anyone else really disappointed the the book membership programs that stores have these days? Borders and B&N are the only ones in my area, and both of their membership programs are lacking. It costs $25 per year to join B&N, but you get 10% off of every purchase (I got the membership for Christmas so that I didn't have to pay up front for it). The Borders one is free, but the coupons you get in your email are kind of puny, like 20%, nothing like the good ones they used to have a few years ago.

Maybe I'll just have to start my own bookstore and membership program? Hmmmm....

2051 Ohhh, very cool that he narrated it! Maybe I'll check my library for the audio some time.

2051 Hi Diane!

How was "Dreams of my Father"? I own it and have yet to start it. I'm always wary of biographies by politicians.

Good luck on your 50-book challenge! You're ahead of me by 1 book :-)

2051 I'm not that big on mysteries, so you might enjoy them even more than I did.

I found The Know-It-All at my library's used bookstore maybe a month ago. I just finished another book this past weekend and so I went on Amazon and looked at reviews for some of the books I have yet to read, and the reviews looked promising. So far I'm really enjoying it. I'm laughing-out-loud at least every 5 pages.

Apparently the author also wrote a book about trying to follow the Bible as literally as possible for an entire year. Sounds interesting - I may check it out when I'm done with this one!

2051 Hi Lisa,
They're not quite as good as the Outlander books, but they're definitely worth the read. I really like Lord John Grey, he's such an interesting character and I'm glad she did a bit of a spin-off series with him. They're all mysteries, by the way. Makes sense because they're such smaller books and I think she was just playing around when she wrote them.

2051 Okay, I know it's June, but I've just joined Goodreads and I have been doing this challenge on my own, beginning January 1st of course.
Here are the books I have read so far:
1. The Messenger by Lois Lowry
2. Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
3. Island of the Sequined Love Nun by Christopher Moore
4. Lord John and the Private Matter by Diana Gabaldon
5. Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade by Diana Gabaldon
6. Lord John and the Hand of Devils by Diana Gabaldon
7. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
8. In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan
9. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
10. Cane River by Lalita Tademy
11. Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
12. Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie
13. Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindquist
14. Slaughterhouse-five by Kurt Vonnegut
15. Eragon by Christopher Paolini
16. Eldest by Christopher Paolini
17. Brisingr by Christopher Paolini

18. The Know-It-All by AJ Jabobs (currently reading)

Hmmm I'm a little disappointed with myself...I was hoping I'd have at least 20 done. Well while it's not likely that I'll get to 50 this year, I'm certainly going to try! Even if for no other reason than to save my pride after joining this group!
