There's a lot less sex in the books, vampire blood as a drug isn't focused on heavily as a plotline, the show really plays up the cheese factor where I think the books are more funny in places than cheesy. The show is basically very loosely based on the books. IE, set in the south, vampires now have rights, the mystery of who's killing the girls (for the first book).
I think the shows are okay in a cheesy sort of way, but I think that Alan Ball is doing a great disservice to the book series with it.
I love the Sookie Stackhouse series and am actually reading through it again now. If you've tried the show and didn't like it, don't let it turn you off of the books, they're nothing alike.I'm also really enjoying the Morganville Vampire series. It's a young adult series so a bit lighter than Sookie.
And while not focused on vampires, I absolutely love the Women of the Otherworld series.
Thanks Becca! I've been on a chain-reading streak that I'm hoping will last the entire year. The Handmaid's Tale was amazing. It's one that has been on my to-read list for years and I just got around to it. I'm so glad I finally did, it was beautiful and horrible.
I've tried planning ahead but it never works out. If I try to force a book that I'm not in the mood for I'll never finish it. So now I choose spur of the moment depending on my mood.
