I got 'The Digital Photography' books by Scott Kelby which I found helpful and informal. I'd probably recommend a good manual for your camera too, as I got a Nikon D60 for my birthday, and all the settings were quite overwhelming.
So, at the moment I'm currently using ye olde Fujifilm FinePix E550.
I have to say, it's been a very good camera (aside from the lack of flash-gun availability), and I only discovered recently had I known earlier I could have bought some new lens for it. Not many point and shoot cameras seem to have that functionality anymore.
In any case, if anyone is wanting a reliable, and easy to use camera with lots of functionality, I would definitely recommend this one.
The first photography book I purchased was by Tom Ang. The book was How to Photograph Absolutely Everything Successful Pictures from Your Digital Camera, and I found the pictures very inspiring, and some of the tips very useful, and easy to put into practice.
I have recently purchased two of Scott Kelby's books (The Digital Photography Book, and The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2) which I found helpful. They are quick to read, yet informative.
The third volume is out soon, so I am looking forward to purchasing this also.
