I really like Fall is Not Easy by Marty Kelley. Preschoolers get a huge kick out of the illustrations.

For third grade students, I usually recommend Clementine by Sara Pennypacker first, then Just Grace by Cherise Harper, and I always remember to suggest Little House in the Big Woods, but then I live in Wisconsin so its a fun one to read.
