William's Doll (Charlotte Zolotow) Is one of my favorites!Because of Winn-Dixie (Kate DiCamillo) inclusion is one of the main subjects
Plain Girl (Virginia Sorenson) About an Amish girl
Witch of Blackbird Pond (Elizabeth George Speare) Mob mentality and prejudice
Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy (Gary D. Schmidt) Prejudice
As you can tell, I mostly go for classics.
I loved the Childhood's of famous americans series, they have updated them recently and so I have been trying to collect the originals. They are biographies of famous people but only their childhoods, they are fabulous. The Little House books of course and The All of a Kind Family Series. Plus just about everything all of you have mentioned.
Some of my favorite powerful girl(princess)books are the dragon books by Patricia Wrede. There are four in all and although the reading level is more middle school they are fabulous. Great read alouds. Starts with Dealing with Dragons.
Reading aloud is the best way to spend time together. I remember my mother reading to us all the time and it didn't seem to matter what the book was the younger kids listened to the Hobbit and the older kids listened to Little House on the Prairie. Some of my favorite read alouds are, the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander, Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, any books by Jean Craighead George and Zilpha Keatley Snyder. There are lots of books out there!!!
