I loved Enid Blyton's school series - Naughtiest Girl, St Claire's and Malory Towers. When younger (ages 6 - 7), my favourites were her Enchanted Wood and Wishing Chair books. Some time later I discovered Jennings (Anthony Buckeridge)- it cracked me up!
Can't remember when i first read Little Women, but I know I have loved it since. Recently, my 9 year old daughter read an abridged version, and it moved her so. Such lovely insights into family ties and friendship.
I have been reading aloud to my kids since they were babies, and i enjoy it as much as they do. My nine year old daughter loves reading, but still enjoys our cuddle in bed whilst i'm reading aloud to her. Her current favourite is Anne of Green Gables. My eight year old son loves listening to me reading aloud from Harry Potter. And both of them enjoy The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. My youngest, who's three, enjoys looking at the words and pictures whilst i read, and loves all the Winnie the Pooh illustrated books.
Thanks Abigail! It's good to have a group to discuss children's books and related stuff - great for parents and early educators!
Hi Tina. Just to share with you my experiences with my children...I have been reading aloud to the children since they were babies, and books have been very much a part of their lives. My daughter took to reading like a duck to water, but to my surprise, my 8 year old boy was a really reluctant reader. I too try to encourage them to read awhile just before bedtime, but it's been tough finding him something that can sustain his interest. Until we discovered Captain Underpants. He really enjoyed it, and we scouted around for more of the series. He even read parts of it out aloud to me! Then i started reading the first Harry Potter book with him, as he really enjoyed the movie, and now he is reading that on his own. Looks like it's off-beat humour and magical adventures that interest him for now. I'll go with anything so long as he's finally enjoying reading :)
Rebecca, I love Christopher Robin too. His friendship with Pooh is just so beautiful! My son loves the Pooh books, but he always wants to be Tigger!
As a kid I always wanted to be like Elizabeth "The Naughtiest Girl" at school. She had such fun, and still became the monitor!
Hi, I'm new to this group too. My kids and nieces have always loved Eric Carle's books right from babyhood - especially The Hungry Caterpillar and Brown Bear Brown Bear. I completely agree with Carol, the same book can appeal to children of different ages. It really depends on how it is presented to the child. Example, The Hungry Caterpillar (board book) - I read it aloud to my baby girl, with actions for eating and for 'big' and 'small'. When she was older, we counted along. In preschool, she read it on her own and together we did a wall mural on the book as a holiday project. It's still one of my favourite memories!
