My students recently enjoyed Cockroach Cooties by Laurence Yep. There are bullying issues to discuss, as well as a complex brother relationship. Recommended!
I think Steve Martin and Roz Chast's book is quite witty and funny. It is funny in the tongue-in-cheek, New Yorker way. After hearing about this book on NPR I bought it for my second grade classroom and the kids loved it! We still chuckle about it in third grade. @BookBuds - personally I find your use of the words bums and winos offensive.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I definitely love Clementine and we read that last year in 2nd grade. I want to make sure I don't only read books with strong girl characters, as I think I am drawn to those.
Shelly, Do you mean The School Mouse by Dick King-Smith? Or another book?
Thanks again,
Kim
Hello,
I am looping with my second grade class to third grade so my students have already heard some of my favorite read alouds. This summer I have been working on finding new favorites! I am especially interested in ensuring diversity in the voices, stories and characters that we devote time to discussing through read aloud.
Here are two I read this summer that I will read aloud to my class:
Love, Ruby Lavendar by Deborah Wiles
Dexter the Tough by Margaret Peterson Haddix
Does anyone have other suggestions?
Thanks,
Kim
I recommend Mo Willems - the pigeon series or the two Knuffle Bunny books are great! You might also try Tomie dePaola. He has written a wide variety of stories and the pictures are engaging.
