Sorry to say I never read it to them, even though it's a great book. I can't remember specifics from those parts. You never want to scare a child, but discussing the whys with him/her can help with tricky parts of books.
I used to read Edward Tulane to my 2nd Graders. At first, they were sceptical because the thought it was too young for them, but they ended up loving it! They would beg me to read it. Some children picked up on some of the symbolism. Love the book!

It's an Early Elementary book about self-acceptance and a great read-aloud!
