1865 Piers Anthony in his "Mode" series (Virtual Mode, Fractal Mode) etc. is somewhat juvenile in his plot, but he has developed a very sophisticated system of overlapping parallel universes. Co-existent with these "modes" are magical abilities which wax and wane differently for different characters in different universes. Add in the mathematics of Mandelbrot (and a whole mess of teenage angst) and you have a great blend of Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Magic.
