Judith Krug, head of Banned Books Week died one week ago in Evanston, IL at the age of 69.
She lost her over-one-year battle with stomach cancer.
She will be sorely missed.
I am hoping to read:
HP and the Sorcerer's Stone
90 Minutes in Heaven
Five People I Met in Heaven
The Lightning Thief
I have to agree with all of those who picked The Road. It was a total wipe out. I was very disappointed.
I would definitely classify this as sci-fi. I haven't quite got the connection of fantasy to The Road. I'll chew on it a little and let you know what, if anything, I found.
I thought from the very beginning of The Road that the kid was right around 10. He is just too knowledgeable and savvy to be younger.
This is my first McCarthy book, and it will be my last. I did not like his style. I realize this one is not is apparently not typical, but I am just totally turned off by the book; I can't see me reading another McCarthy book. The punctuation itself was enough to send me reeling in pool of jumbled words. I just don't like his style.
I can see Richard's point. He was there to get his son to the "promised land." His paranoia made it nearly impossible to get there, though. By insisting on following the road, he might have missed his chance when it was away from the road. I think he thought he was a "good guy", but I am not sure that he really was. His paranoia was causing him to make a lot of decisions that were not advantageous to either the boy or himself. There obviously were other "good guys" as observed at the end of the story.
I, personally, did not like the lack of punctuation, or the inconsistency of the punctuation that was there. I went along with Callie on the apostrophes, but she was right when she said the reason she gave was also inconstent. The commas, I usually found, as needed. His numerous run-on sentences had commas in order to set apart something special in the sentence, which one might not get otherwise. I am not sure there is any consistency with that, though, either. It just really took away from the story for me.
I was not happy with the book. I hated the grammar, which made me unsure of who was talking when. I thought it was probably a good representation of a post-apocalyptic novel, but I really don't know. I have never read one before until now. I liked how the father took such good care of the boy.
I got 7, but I just figured something went wrong with the system or something. I didn't think you were spamming.
I really can't tell between Tasselhoff Burrfoot and Raistlin in Dragonlance. I like Taz because he is so much fun. I like Raistlin because he is evil and trying to get stronger in his craft. Maybe it's the good/evil thing, but I like them both.
I also like Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit.
Steven,I will have to try that speed Scrabble if I can get enough people together. Of course, I might lose my title of Scrabble Queen if I played that very much. Oh well, I like to try new games and new takes on old games. I really will have to give it a go.
I am planning on reading:Holes
Something Wicked This Way Comes
Fallen
A Wrinkle in Time
November Grass
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
Tales of Mystery and Madness
Anne of Green Gables
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
I like the idea of the theme selections. I usually read them instead of the random master selections. I think they have a better flavor about them.
I have Scrabble, Tri-Ominos, and a deck of cards. I don't get too much of a chance to play, because I live by myself.
I haven't read any other Zelazny books, but I really enjoyed this one. I think I just might get some more Zelazny.
