As the nominator of this book, I feel I have to speak up.
I was definitely mislead by Wiki, which is where I found the book in the first place. Since Powers is generally known as steampunk I didn't think anything of it at the time. It sounded like an interesting book so I nominated it.
I agree that it did not really end up being a solid representation of the genre, however, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm glad it was picked. It seems many of you did as well, but I apologize to those of you who feel disappointed at the selection.
I think Benner got what he deserved, considering he tried to kill Doyle. Same for Doyle's ka, who was described as a bit of a lunatic, suggesting that he wasn't quite right from the beginning.
And I can't seem to recall whatever happened to Byron's ka, can someone remind me?
I LOVED the way Horrabin went, I found it very satisfying!
Like Brooke, I knew from the moment Ashbless didn't show up at the tavern that Doyle was going to be Ashbless.I also predicted that his ka would be the one to show up at the end and kill him. At first I thought it would be Romany (a future/past version of him) but obviously when he was killed I realized that wasn't the case!
I didn't mind the personality changes, I figure that when you switch bodies like that a little bit of the former inhabitant must linger behind. They even talked a little bit about that in terms of memories, so I just assumed the same would go for a few personality traits as well. It didn't distract me.
I will be continuing the series, and I've already picked up The Drawing of the Three — I'm hoping to get to it next month. My husband has read books 1-4 and he said that the series definitely gets better. King even said in his foreward that The Gunslinger is a difficult book for the reader, which I agreed with, even though I read the revised version which supposedly made things clearer. I guess the next book (maybe the next two books?) goes back before the events we read about in The Gunslinger.
Having only read The Gunslinger, my initial thought is that Roland is a force of good. His quest to reach the Dark Tower for "some unimaginable final battle" is what leads to me believe this, particularly after reading this passage, spoken by the man in black:"I am the furthest minion of he who now rules the Dark Tower, and Earth has been given into that king's red hand."
I can only assume by "red hand" that the ruler of the Dark Tower is indeed the Devil himself, and that the final battle will be that of good vs. evil.
I am eager to read the next in the series, although I only gave this one 3 stars. My husband has alluded to me that the man in black is none other than Randall Flagg, does anyone else know if this is true, or is this just his conclusion? He hasn't read the series in a long time and he can't remember one way or the other! Your thoughts?
Ok, I'm feeling ambitious this month so here goes...for Goodreads book clubs:
The Gunslinger - S. King
The Anubis Gates (if I can find it anywhere) - Tim Powers
Good Omens, the Nice & Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch - N. Gaiman/T. Pratchett
on my own:
Charlotte Gray - Sebastian Faulks
Lightning,- Dean Koontz
Started it this morning, so far I agree with other comments that it's difficult to get into. However, I am hopeful and I am liking the overall premise of the story. My husband likes this series and I've been wanting to read it, so I'm glad it was chosen this month.
John — have heard great things about Power Grid but can't seem to get our hands on a copy. Love Settlers, PR, and Carcossonne. You should join our group!!
I love Guillotine! It's a fun game to introduce non-gaming people to the world of card games beyond Uno!
Hmmm, I'll never forget reading The Langoliers or The Library Policeman by Stephen King. The Monkey's Paw (W.W. Jacobs) is another one, and of course all of E.A. Poe!
Great, I hope to see you all on our boards over at the Tabletop Games & SFF Book club . So far we've picked up some nice tips on new games, and hopefully one day we'll have a group book-reading as well!
I think you could pretty easily catch up, you've only missed two. I would maybe read an episode synopsis and then decide. I also believe you can watch episodes online at fox.com, and you can download them for a small fee on iTunes.
Yeah, the face falling off part was pretty nasty. I also thought some of last night was kind of gross too, but I don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen the episode. I'm not afraid of gore, though, so it doesn't bother me, but I can see how some people (like my husband) might be squeamish about some of it.
Jon - The gory parts are short-lived, maybe you can watch and keep a pillow near by to cover your eyes with during those scenes?
I've been watching it and I have high hopes — the pilot episode was OK, nothing great, but good enough to get me to tune again this week. Last night's episode was good. I think once the actors settle into their roles and are more comfortable with each other it will be a very good show. At least that's my hope, I need something to fulfill the loss of X-Files or The Outer Limits!
I'll admit that I'm a sucker for cover art. However, if the jacket description does not hold my interest past the first sentence, I'll usually put it down.
Angie — we welcome all Gamers!
Thomas — there isn't necessarily supposed to be a connection between games & books (I happen to love both, so I wanted to create a group), but there certainly could be! I have played a few games that were based on books, like Game of Thrones, LOTR, and Alice in Wonderland. I know there are a number of RPGs that are based on books as well, as a friend pointed out on the RPG thread, they are creating one based on the Dresden Files.
Hey fellow gamers, just wanted to post a quick note here to let you know about a group I set up for a gaming & book club on Goodreads...check it out if you're interested, we'd love to have you!
