i read this pretty recently, and definitely come down on the side of classic. i think all Great sci-fi revolves around what it means to be human, and this one does that better than most.
i actually think the character lessa has a lot in common with typical romance novel heroines. the strong willed impetuousness, the rather adversarial start to her relationship with f'lar...i'm not comparing the books to romance novels, but her character struck me that way.

ah! i could have looked it up, i suppose. i remember carrying that gigantic thing around for WEEKS. i'll have to read more of his now - i think my tiny small town library actually has a few.
anyone ever read a book called footfall? i remember reading that in 8th grade, around the time i read battlefield earth, but i don't remember the author.

oh, was i obvious? :) yes, for whatever reason, she just resonates with me. Wild Seed is part of a series - the next ones (in order of the storyline, not of publication) Mind of My Mind, Clay's Ark, and Patternmaster. My favorite of hers is probably the Xenogenesis trilogy: Dawn, Adulthood Rites, Imago. Also published as "Lilith's Brood". For more spec fic, there's the parables: Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents. She also has a vampire novel, Fledgling. you have to stop me, i'll talk about her forever. not sure why i'm so nutty about her, but there you have it. Oh, and Kindred is sort of a modern slave narrative with a fantasy driven plot.
has anyone mentioned octavia butler's xenogenesis (lilith's brood) trilogy? that's my favorite apocalypes novel, and possibly my favorite sci-fi. i'm a little nutty in my enthusiasm for her books.
i check out orson scott card's blog from time to time. you have to wade through a bunch of other stuff, but he gives informative reviews of up and coming speculative fiction - along with everything else.
hello there. i'm jessica and i'm a book addict. i live in alabama and work in a university in communications. i read everything - classics, sci-fi/fantasy, mysteries, anything else well-written.
some sci-fi faves: octavia butler, orson scott card's ender series (more than his other works), octavia butler, phillip k dick, octavia butler, ursula leguin....
not a big fan of heinlein, but i like fantasy as well - tolkein, rowling, gaiman. i'm enjoying jim butcher's codex alera, even if the writing's not exactly first rate.
