Great! We (I) want more male conversation on the book.

1865 I am currently reading The Bone People - fascinating writing style going on in this book.

After that I am going to start New World Monkeys A Novel next.

After that, back to some sci-fir or fantasy.

1865 Rita: I am guessing you are referring to Moira. Some people fight and don't stop. It did not seem as though she was even part of any covert resistance/assistance during our last encounter with her in the book. Some people reach a point where they resign themselves to their fate. There is no judgment upon Moira, simply sadness for her.

1865 Louise: I do hope you like it, also.

1865 I don't mind short stories on audio tape - my friends father had some he would play in the car for us back in the 1980s. I would not want to listen to a full length novel - I enjoy pondering what I am reading on occasion and would not want the pressure to keep going at a steady pace.

I also like the look of pretty words (weird???) and get great visual pleasure when an author has written a particularly interesting word or phrase.

I was 12 when it originally came out and remembered loving (love, love, loving) it, but cannot really remember why - preteen insanity made a couple years there a bit of a blur (haha). I deliberately did not watch the original again because I wanted to give this one a chance.

I do plan to rent the original miniseries to watch again after these four episodes are done.

1865 I finally saw the first episode (a bit behind). I liked it. But, only four episodes before a break is so risky.

1865 That looks interesting. Hopefully my library service will carry it.

1865 Patrick: I have gone back and forth about this too. Likely, I would have fought and likely died early on. The fighting needed to happen with the generation that remembered how it was before, because the next generation would not have those memories to incite them. If every handmaid (or a majority) fought back it would have rocked the new foundation of Gilead.

But, in the book, some of the people who chose not to fight openly (or could not) were trying to fight covertly. That is quite brave.

Moira saddens me most. She was a fighter but in the end it does seem that she gave up.

Keep in mind, with the rampant infertility and the popular belief that the infertility was a women's issue only, many of the women in the world Atwood created would try to justify the setup in their own minds as the best way to keep the population growing (or stable).

And: women can be very cruel to other women. We often hurt each other for reasons as simple as "it happened to me so now it will happen to you". We don't protect each other as we should.

1865 Done. New topic created.

1865 Rachel so nicely described it as: "Your perspective on The Handmaid's Tale as a man or woman".

1865 Rachel wrote: "We should start a Female/Male thread on this. I think it could really open an interesting dialogue. The book itself intended to confront gender roles, so I think it would be wholly appropriate to examine it from a gender perspective."

It would be interesting to know how many men are reading (have read) the book.

Are you thinking two separate topics, for example "Men Discussion" and "Women Discussion"?

1865 Meghan wrote: "...Atwood's Gilead may or may not ever come to be, but this kind of dictatorship has existed throughout humanity's long history--Nazi Germany anyone?..."

Yep- thought of this many times before.

For those who argue it could not happen, I would say that is having far too much faith in human beings. Many people would sit back and "let it happen". As Rachel previously pointed out, the Patriot Act is proof of that. The outrage over the act was terrible small compared to the population of this country. Now, who even discusses it, let alone fights against it? Not many.

The technology is beyond the time period this starts out in and women are out in the workforce strongly, so the details/methods would certainly be different. But, it still could happen.

1. Love the discussions so far.
2. (I use them a lot, too).

1865 I like the movie and don't mind the changes, but I remember the first time I watched it I was quite unhappy. The second time around I had already reconciled myself to the changes and was then able to enjoy it.

1865 Tim Curry - yum! (even older and larger around the middle...)

I absolutely loved "Tin Man".
So looking forward to "Alice".
