I don't remember a diary in it either, but it may have been one of the other search keywords that pulled it up. I do remember reading it over and over again. What's funny is, I had no recollection of the book until it popped up... it was an "OH my Gawd" moment!
Here's the cover I remember from The Velvet Room as you can see it is nothing like any of the covers posted here...so...when you are looking for a book and someone posts a title that is very close to the book you're looking for, don't discount it because the cover doesn't match.

I read "Green Darkness" a few weeks ago, now I'm reading "Dragonwyck" I'm on a Seton kick right now! So far "The Winthrop Woman" is my favorite, partly because she references some of my early ancestors in her novel!
A Garden of Briars by Elizabeth McNeill, 1993.

Avalon A Novel by Anya Seton first published in 1965. Would be a book on the library shelf. Her books are being reprinted again. Even if this is not the one it's a great read. The main character is not brought up in an Abbey she is abducted and taken to Iceland (and later Greenland) by Norsemen. Her love interest does become a monk (of whom she does see on her return to England)
Not a trashy romance novel!
