185 It was definitely Under the Eye of God.
Thanks again to vicki_girl and everyone else who suggested books! Oh, my TBR pile...
185 The story I was thinking of has a boy getting to the land of lost things I *think* through the dryer, after his lucky socks.
185 I feel like I read this and it was a short story.
185 Maybe your girlfriend's mother can help? She might recognize the cover.
185 That helps! Have you tried searching http://historicalromance.myzen.co.uk/mbh...

185 No rush, thanks for looking! I hope your husband feels better soon.

185 Yes, that sounds right. I even thought the poodle's name was the title. But I don't remember the name!

185 This picture book was published at least 25 years ago. It was a about a standard poodle, but was anthropomorphic. I think he even wore clothes. It might have been sent in France. The only detail I remember was that there were some lavish desserts depicted (maybe in the window of a bakery) that looked quite tasty when I was a little kid!
185 Was it an adult book, or younger?
185 Any idea when it was published?

185 Damnation Alley by Roger Zelazny? That has a group of WWIII survivors crossing the desert in search of other survivors. I think there is a woman from somewhere else that meets up with them.

185 Some of those elements (Egypt, twins, girl, I think cat) are in Pamela Service's the Reluctant God.

185 Paul, what was your book? Sounds interesting.
185 I'm trying to help someone find the book his girlfriend was named after. Neither of them has read, and all they know is:

- The main character’s name is Germaine,
- The main character is a nun who escapes or runs away from a convent for love.
- Printed before 1987

185 No, definitely not Moorcock. I don't think it was someone famous. And it was way more wholesome than any Moorcock I've ever read!
185 Any idea when it would have been published, Ryan?

185 @vicki_girl I think David Gerrold is it! I think I may have only read the second one and missed the start of the series. Thanks! And thanks to everyone for the great recommendations! I'm going to go read some vampire sci-fi -- it'll be like middle school all over again.

185 DeLint kind of pioneered the elves-in-modern-cities deal so you might try looking over his books, especially earlier ones which have been out of print (they're getting reissued now, but I haven't read them yet).
185 Was the girl's companion an actual monster, or just horrible? And do you remember if there were some rats or mice in it? I think Emmy in Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat was left with an evil lady while her parents traveled around...
185 Oh, actually she does have a scar on her hand, from where her evil older brother burned her with a poker. I don't think there was anything magical about the scar, though.
