17216 This book left me wondering--did she go back and try to rescue those she left behind. Should she?

What is the rest of the world like?

What was the hidden knowledge the sisterhood kept and what experiments were they doing on folks.

So as you can see I wanted more. I have a a whole pile of books to be read for various clubs and some just cuz, but as soon as I opened this book, I couldn't put it down.

Yes, Mary made some bone head decisions, but everyone around her was modeling boneheadedness. Where would she have learned logic?

OK, gotta get to work. Sorry I am a month late on this one. I guess thats just how I roll these days.

17216 I have read this book now and I really liked it. the pacing was great, the world painted a the strange twists a society may take when faced with the unfacable.
I liked Mary. I a world of rigid dogma, and stick social controls, she hung on to her self determination, even when she was put in the most controlling and abusive situations.

Now see, I saw her self centered-ness as part of her age, and how she survived the abuse of her town and family and friends. I was actually more concerned with how self-centered every one else was. Travis left her hanging and all of them just left her to wave in the wind when her mom turned.

Her ability to dream of another life, and her devotion to her mom, beyond reason, were what made all of them love her, and push her away.

I really enjoyed this book. I was a little nervous to read it because I have heard less then favorable reviews. But I should know better. I often dont like books everyone raves about, and and sometimes I love the books everyone raves about. I just gotta read it!

I was one who really wanted to read this and now that yall read it I have been inconmmunicato and havent read it yet. Well, now I must read this just to experience the torn thing. I am way curious. Anyway, to the question of love hate relationship with a charicter. I feel that way about Sookie. Sookie and her perpetual victimhood, and Jason and his good old boy thing just grated on my nerves. I wasnt even that enchanted with the world. After a few books and more supes started coming forward and sookie started to develop a bit more demension, I started liking the series, and even now I like the series but still have a love hate relationship with Sook. Now, I must say when she started getting it on with eric, I was/am so enchantged with HIM that the series took a whole new shine for me. And I LOVE True Blood. I like the charicters in True Blood more than in the Dead books. Oh well, enough of a rant for me. Thanks for asking the quesion.

17216 But Mark Henry is not a chick, so maybe the publisher chooses the cover, but the inside may not be too chick litty. Anyway this is one I have meant to read since they all raved about this guy and book on B&Ns paranormal thread. I rarely read what folks call chick lit, although I enjoy some of the paranormal romance. I lean harder to straight paranormal, fantasy, sci fi, and horror. If I remember the banter, this book is soposed to be pretty snarky too. Who know, I havent read it.

anyway, good choice I am looking forward to.

17216 I finally finished this book. I liked it. I would call it paranormal romance. I think the world is so much like the watcher world, I wonder if it is in the same world at a earlier time. Santiago city was it, wasnt' that in watcher and valentine books?

17216 I liked Hob's Bargain. I think it was in the YA section so given that, it fits the bill very well--even though the protag is 30, she hasn't begun her trip to self realization until her husband dies.

Dragon Bones and its companion are of a simalar tone. Standard fantasy, coming of age books. But what makes them work is Briggs ability to write simply, and pull you into the world, so you almost know the protags and care what happens and choose to believe and cheer for the HEA.

I love reading the progression of Briggs writing skill.

17216 Its about a world where, maybe 15 years ago the population started spontaniously evolving into varous mutations of humanity/animals. There are some who didn't who are the at the top of the hiarchy. the protag evolved the ability to switch between genders. It is her and her childrens story at the center of a wierd tale. One may say it is a dystopian story. Closest story it reminds me of is Magic time. Anyway, what I like so far is her ability to write in pictures. Use her words in a pretty way, even when discribing uglyness.

17216 I started a new job (YEA) but my reading has really slowed down, or at least non work related reading. I read a couple chapters a night and just fall out. Currently reading Turn Coat (The Dresden Files, #11)and Ice Song. Both are good. Ice Song is a new author, and Straight sci fi. Her writing is Lyrical. It is something different. As far as Dresden, well, yup, I still love him and his adventures.

17216 Me too!! I thought it is so shocking that this was read before the swine flu started in...da da da, Mexico, and folks started freaking out. I think this year its gunna be big. Interesting to see what unfolds.

Besides the social commentary, it was just a good story. And yesssssss, I loved Kushel books.

17216 Tanith Lee is a fantasy author. I read some of her stuff, long ago. It seems to me she writes both standard fanatasy and YA. I think that would be a good place to start. Closest to the stuff we read here. Asimov is a standard so I would go there. More hardcore science based fiction. Real Science fiction.

17216 Finished Santa Olivia. I really liked it. More than I thought I would. It did what sci fi or alternate reality fiction should. Said something about todays current events, in a fun wonderful and gripping story. Loved the charicters, the premise, and the flow of the story.

Carey stays in my list of great authors.

Still working on Warbreaker. It is good. Color is the magical manifastation and breaths are the vehicle. Wierd cool world.

17216 Oh yea!
(slight spoiler)
I really enjoyed the first two episodes on BBC america. Looking forward to the upcoming 4 and more later. Seems Anna is kinda falling for Mitchell, and I must say, cant blame her. (yum). The dynamic should be interesting cause he cant drain her can he? Stalker vamp would go crazy I think.

17216 Well, I cant unread the book. I read it a couple years ago, and have always intended to someday read the rest of the series. Given all this stuff, it wont happen.

17216 I love Sanderson. His writing is easy to read and fun. Currently just cracked "Warbreaker" by Sanderson. It is good. ( I posted earlier that I wanted to read this, but I forgot that this is the first book, Mistborn---which I read already. I thought you were referring to the third book in the series, which I havent read yet and am looking forward to. Anyway, scrambled brain here.

17216 Hobbs Bargain is pretty good. I love everything by Briggs so I will be interested in what folks think. I read it a little less than two years ago.
