Donnajo, books do not stay free forever at Amazon. You need to go ahead and download the whole book, then if you do not like it just delete it. Even though you downloaded the sample while the book was free, if you wait to purchase and the book goes up in price, you will end up paying whatever the price that day is. It never asks you whether or not you want the rest of the book.
Sample lengths are all over the place. Some have only one chapter, some two, and some have only a page or two.
As for the Nook, I would suggest going to the B&N Nook website and checking to see what books they offer free. Free books differ with each retailer. Sony and Amazon usually offer the same books free but not always. Take the list of free Amazon books and see if B&N has the same books or even more.

No Marcy, I haven't read anything by her yet, but I too downloaded this. Sounded pretty good, I think there are others here who have read some of her books if I am remembering correctly.
Ann, I read this and then read people's reasoning for how they wanted to designate audio books. How do you know the number of minutes/hours you have listened? I find this perplexing as I just listen on my way to and from work, shopping, etc. I could not tell you how much time I had spent listening at any one time in a book. I think people must use the Jan O'Cat method of math...... all this dividing and multiplying was a little too hard for me. That being said, there were certainly very interesting responses. Who would have thought it would be so hard.
Amy, the Kindle 2 has 2gs of capacity or holds around 1500 books. You really do not have to worry about capacity. All books purchased through Amazon are stored in your Amazon account in your Manage My Kindle page. I delete books I've read from my kindle, BUT should I want to re-read them, all I have to do is go to my archives and tell it to re-download the book. I have 350 books actually on my kindle and still have 1067mb left. All the other books I have already read are stored at Amazon. It has 3G wireless connectivity. The USB cord allows you to download books that you have downloaded to your computer for reasons below:
1. you are out of the 3G wireless network (when this is true you just download the kindle book to your computer and then transfer using the USB to your kindle. When you are purchasing books from Amazon, it gives you the option to download to your kindle or to the computer. (if you own multiple kindles, it actually gives you the option to download to a specific kindle. Once kindles are purchased and registered to an account, that kindle gets a name like kindle 1, kindle 2, etc. You can change the name of your kindle once you have registered it to say Molly, Artie, Junior, whatever you want.)
2. you use the USB to transfer books you have downloaded to your computer from other sources that provide digital books in kindle format, i.e. Girlebooks, manybooks.net, gutenberg, feedbooks, Baen books, Smashwords, places like that.
Hope this helps.
53???? Fifty-three??? FIFTY-THREE? Ms O'Cat is really 53? gosh I thought she was only 29. She has such youthful posts and all.
Lots and lots of people are taking advantage of this free download. The Top Sellers on the kindle list are almost all classics, meaning books pre-1923. This tells me people are downloading the app and trying it out with free books. This has totally messed up the Top Sellers listing and the Movers and Shakers listing. Just my thoughts of course
