Locked in the latest Sharon McCone by Marcia Muller - I enjoyed it, but it was really tiny chapters, some only a page with different POV's per chapter. It moved the story along but not really my favorite style. I liked the chapters where we were "in Sharon's head" best.

Homer's Odyssey a Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned About Love and Life with a Blind Wonder Cat this was more than a sweet story about a blind cat and his adventures. Mom and I enjoyed reading it together. I found it to be inspirational, hard not to be inspired by such a gutsy little cat!

Re The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Ok I am good with that - I like to discover things like this on my own too. Thanks!
Carol/Bonadie wrote: "Ann, I now have a better idea of where it's going, but I think I won't say more because it was fun not knowing and I don't want to spoil it for others. I encourage anyone up for an adventure to give it a try..."
Leslie:
I am so sorry to hear of your BIL's diagnosis. Hugs and best wishes to all of you.
Leslie wrote: "Thank you for all the wonderful Happy Birthday wishes. It really meant a lot to me to read them. I have been out of town because my brother-in-law was in the hospital where it was discovered that he has terminal cancer...."
Melodie:
We are planning to go see Sherlock Holmes too.... Christmas Day release. We really like Robert Downey Jr. ;)
Melodie wrote: " I'll probably see the movie as my friend loved Mark Wahlberg and immediately said we had to see it when we saw the preview. I liked the preview for Sherlock Holmes, too. ."
Having just seen New Moon today with my DD; (we both loved it) I appreciated how true the movie was to the book.
There was a preview for one particular movie that I had already heard was coming out -- Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones, so I wasn't surprised to see it; but I was a bit surprised at my reaction. It moved me to tears with just the preview.
Carol:
Very intriguing! I look forward to hearing more about The Angel's Game

This book was recommended the friend who recommended The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It's got a curious plot line and I'm not sure where it's going to lead. I would say it's sort of a cross Great Expectations and The Thirteenth Tale How is that for a tease? .."
But of course, Ms. Jan O'Wisecat!!

Someday everyone will use O'Catmath.

Welcome to the group Joyce! We are thrilled to have you stick around and chat with us about books - most of us read all different genres as well as Mystery Thrillers. I am looking forward to Under the Dome too!
Joyce wrote: "Hi, I'm Joyce from Southern California. I love the M/T genre, and used to read it almost exclusively but have branched out the last few years. I still read Robert Crais, Harlan Cobe..."
LOL Barry, you are surprised about the slightly part of that sentence, right? ;)
Barry wrote: "We have slightly crazy people here? Why did nobody tell me? "
Amy:
Amazon is very highly rated for customer service.
I hope they like their new Kindles!!
...wondering how I can get on Amy's gift list :)
Amy wrote: "I ordered the Kindle 2 for my daughter and SIL last night. It charged me for shipping, so I went to contact us and put in my phone number, they called me right away and the person I spoke to took the charge off. It was great dealing with them. I wish more websites would do this. "
Gail, Marcy, Sherry:
I highly recommend Carol O'Connel's books, both stand-alones and the Mallory series. I really liked Bone by Bone
Gail/Ladyvolz wrote: " Bone by Bone "
Thanks for noting this, Gail. I just downloaded it. ..... I think there are others here who have read some of her books if I am remembering correctly.

Jan:
I have a different Michael Koryta book in my tbr pile. I hope to get to it soon (before the due date). I have been a bit of a library scofflaw lately... ;)
JanG wrote: "A bit of a slow month:

Gail: Excellent question!
I calculate roughly the hours or time I listen to audio books that are on CD's based on the percentage of the total CD's I have listened to. Last week I listened to several short stories on my commute (downloaded on my pda from audible.com) after finishing my audio on library CD's. At least my pda gives elapsed time vs. the total download, though I can't read it while in the car.
It is a challenge. Jan O'Cat's method is close to what I use in my head. ;)
Gail/Ladyvolz wrote: " ... How do you know the number of minutes/hours you have listened? I find this perplexing as I just listen on my way to and from work, shopping, etc. I could not tell you how much time I had spent listening at any one time in a book......I think people must use the Jan O'Cat method of math...... Hardball (thanks anyway Sherry!) I was finally able to finish this VERY good book. Hard Ball is a thoughtful study of a Civil Rights era cold case involving members of VI's family and with political implications today that turned deadly. VI's investigation turns into a rush against time and corruption to stop the killing, forty years later.

new audio A Separate Country found this one at the library today, a happy surprise. I have a signed copy from the Southern Festival of Books, but am happy to listen to it now rather than wait to get to it. I enjoyed Robert Hick's previous book, The Widow of the South
Sherry:
I am going to try very hard to finish Hard Ball this weekend. Who needs sleep? ;)
Thanks a bunch, I'll let you know if I am not successful.
Sherry wrote: "when i finish hardball, i'd be happy to send it to you. i won it from good reads.
as for gabaldon, i am ready for another because she left SO much up in the air and way too many loose ends. made me quite mad, actually..lol "
Shomeret:
I hope that is true for all of us with several great nysteries ahead before the end of the year lists are compiled.
Shomeret wrote: "I only read one mystery, and the year may come to an end for me with no more than five nominations for A rated M/Ts. That's sad. I think this has been a good year for fantasy. We'll see if I have time to read some really great mysteries before January 1.."
As for your comments about De Lint's writing and position. I must agree, it is so much more satisfying to read a book where the story and author's thoughts lead you to think and to learn and see things from different perspectives.
Charles De Lint addresses a different kind of purity in the Afterword to this tenth anniversary edition. The idea that only people of a certain ethnic identity should be allowed to write about them is, as De Lint says, bad for literature. He advocates doing your research, being respectful and promoting the writers from that ethnic group who were your resources and inspirations.
Shomeret:
As always I enjoys your comments on the books you read. I especially liked this one This really isn't much of a mystery. I suppose it's a whydunit.
....and wish I could say I have read this much recently Comments: It took me two days to read 96 pages!
This also is a gem of a comment - so true! Satires depend on whose ox is being gored. If you think the target of the satire richly merits it, you'll love it. If the target of the satire seems significant to you, you'll probably find the satire reprehensible. off to read your second post...
Lori: Your math is good too (and with the 17th anniversary, approved by the O'Cat Math Institute too. ;)
Lori S wrote: "Jan, I love your math. It's even better than mine - I too am 56 this year and I am celebrating the 17th anniversary of my 39th birthday. "
Sherry:
I am still reading Hardball until the library police take it away. I may have to switch to reading my own books for a while the way I am missing due dates.
Just curious, re: An Echo in the Bone now that you finished it, are you ready for another one? I was when I read A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
