I just finished Oracle's Legacy Children Of Sun today, and was blown away. I received it for review, and it had a pretty plain cover, and after the first chapter I was ready to give up, except that I had agreed to review it.So I pressed on, and it was so good. Besides editing errors (spelling and such) that were a little distracting, the story was awesome. I loved it!
Thanks Laura! I've been at PBS for a few years now, but I've put a hold on ordering books for awhile. I try to use the library when I can because I already own so many books. So unless it's one of my keeper authors, or one I know I'll want to re-read, I'm not letting myself get any new books. I shouldn't have too hard of a time catching up, though. I'm just avoiding the spoiler thread until I get it. I've got Cordelia's Honor on hold, so I'll already have the second one available to read once I get it.
Shellie, you won't believe this, but there are no used bookstores anywhere close to me. Not that I'm bitter or anything. Okay, maybe a little bit. I used to live in a pretty small town, and there were two. Now I'm in the suburbs of a fairly large city, and there's nothing within a half hour of me.I'm a pretty fast reader, though, so once I get it I'll catch up pretty quick, and hopefully be back on track for the second book.
I have it on hold at the library. There is only one copy in the whole system, though, and it's not due until the end of this month, so I'm going to be behind.
I don't usually buy books, I use the library, but I'm sure I'll eventually get to the two Jacqueline Carey books, and Warbreaker by Sanderson.

I finished the book yesterday, and now I'm just mad I wasted my time reading it. I knew as I was nearing the end that absolutely nothing would be resolved, and if I wanted to find out how things played out I would have to read further in the series. I don't want to do that, though.

I have spent what seems like forever on this book, and am finally nearing the end. I wish I had given up long ago, but after reading for so long, I feel like I should finish.
I just don't get it, though. From what I've read, nothing particularly interesting has happened with traveling, so why would it be such a big deal? Certainly nothing has happened that someone would come back from and try to change the world. Maybe it's all thrown in there at the end, and I'll still get to it, but so far I keep thinking what's the big deal, and who cares?
The author writes and writes, but doesn't ever say anything. Why are the travelers so dangerous to the Brethren? What is it that they're bringing back from other realms? What are the ideas they're getting? I wish the author would just give me SOMETHING. I don't want to read more books of mostly nothing just to get more tidbits of useless information.
Diane, don't read Bone Crossed unless you've read the rest of the series! That's number 4, and you'll probably be lost and not like it if you haven't read the other three. Start with Moon Called. :)

I'm having a really hard time with this one, so I'm glad to see your post, Stefan. I've just hit the 100 page mark, and it's just so slow, and I'm never motivated to pick it up. If I know it'll get better (and from your post it sounds like it does), I'll keep pushing forward.
I just got done reading Stray by Rachel Vincent. It's a paranormal; very good, I was hooked the whole way through. I started Earth Abides, but it's slow going for me. I'm thinking I might have to read bits at a time between reading other books.
Maybe it's just my area, but it's not just the teen (or pre-teen) girls. My mother-in-law was gushing about it one time. She was talking about it like it was real: "And Jacob did this, and Bella was so afraid, but she didn't need to be" (something like that, anyway).
And when a friend and I went to see Casino Royale, which came out the same day as Twilight, there were droves of grown women there to see Twilight. We couldn't even find a parking spot.
I do agree with you that it doesn't have staying power, though.
I felt the same about Twilight. Read the first one, didn't hate it, but didn't think it was particularly well written, either. I tried picking up the second one, but after 10 pages of the main character whining (just like in the first book), I gave up.
There are so many better books out there, I can't figure out why the Twilight series is so popular. It baffles me. Different tastes, I guess.
I was so excited to read that on his blog this morning! Although I don't have HBO, or cable at all for that matter. I'm one of those that has to watch things online, or wait for DVD.
I'll nominate Steven Erikson's Malazan series, which starts with Gardens of the Moon. The ninth book will be coming out later this year, and I think they're fairly large books.
